Character Customization
Grand Theft Auto VI features a substantially expanded character customization system compared to previous entries. Confirmed features include strand-based hair rendering, dynamic hair and beard growth over time, Lucia's makeup and nail customization, multiple outfit options, gym activities that appear to affect physique, and accessories like wristwatches that display real in-game time. Both official trailers show Jason and Lucia in a wide variety of looks across different scenes.
Strand-Based Hair
GTA VI uses strand-based hair rendering, a technology where individual strands of hair react independently to character movement, wind, and physics. Digital Foundry confirmed this in their technical analysis of Trailer 2. In one Trailer 1 scene, Lucia's hair flies up naturally during movement. In Trailer 2, her hair blows in the wind and matches the speed of the car she is riding in.
What makes this particularly notable is that the strand-based rendering applies to all characters, including NPCs, not just the protagonists. Digital Foundry pointed out that this is a significant technical achievement, as strand-based hair rendering is computationally expensive and most games limit it to one or two main characters. The technology also extends to body hair and arm hair, with separate animation layers for hair and clothing.
The hair rendering improved visibly between the two trailers. Trailer 1's hair physics were already strong, but by Trailer 2 the strands appeared softer and more naturally reactive to environmental conditions. Realistic sweat rendering is also visible on character models in both trailers.
Hair and Beard Growth
Characters display growing hairstyles and facial hair over time, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. This is listed as an officially confirmed feature on GTABase's feature guide. Jason's appearance varies noticeably across different trailer scenes: some shots show him clean-shaven with light stubble, while others show a scraggly short beard. His head hair ranges from longer locks poking out of a hat to a closely cropped buzz cut.
In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan's hair and beard grew naturally over each 24-hour in-game cycle, with 7 natural hair growth levels and 10 beard levels (7 natural, 3 requiring a consumable Hair Tonic). Barber shops allowed trimming to specific styles. GTA VI's hair growth system appears to follow this model, though the exact growth rates and level counts have not been detailed by Rockstar.
Lucia's Cosmetic Options
GTABase's confirmed features guide lists "fine-tuning Lucia's makeup, fingernail length, color, and style" as a confirmed customization feature. This represents a first for the GTA series in terms of detailed cosmetic customization for a protagonist. Lucia appears with varying makeup looks across different trailer scenes, consistent with a player-controlled cosmetic system.
Outfits and Clothing
Both protagonists appear in multiple distinct outfits across the trailers and the 70-plus official screenshots Rockstar released alongside Trailer 2. Clothing physically moves in the wind thanks to cloth simulation technology visible in the trailer footage.
Lucia's Confirmed Outfits
Outfit | Description | Accessories |
|---|---|---|
Gold sequin dress | Shimmering gold dress, now iconic and closely associated with the character | Gold hoop earrings, boxing glove necklace, heels |
Prison uniform | Orange LDC jumpsuit from Leonida Penitentiary scenes | White prison-issue sneakers |
Pink crop top | Hot pink long-sleeve crop top with camo leggings | White sneakers, boxing glove necklace |
Denim shorts | Black crop top with blue denim shorts | Black belt, navy Converse, dark red bandana |
Athletic wear | Sports bra and leggings for MMA training and gym | Training sneakers, hair tied back |
Jason's Appearance Variations
Jason's look changes considerably across trailer scenes. His hair ranges from longer blonde locks to a short buzz cut. His facial hair shifts from clean-shaven to a full scraggly beard. His build appears more muscular in scenes where he is working out (particularly a beach weightlifting sequence where he bench-presses 265 lbs / 120 kg) and leaner in others. He is frequently seen wearing backward caps, and his outfits range from a palm tree shirt to a bulletproof vest over a white t-shirt.
Jason has a visible tattoo of a wounded eagle pierced by an arrow, a classical symbol from Greek fable associated with pride and downfall. Whether additional tattoos can be acquired through gameplay (as in GTA V's tattoo parlors) has not been confirmed.
Gym and Fitness
Both trailers show the protagonists engaging in physical activities that may affect their appearance. Jason is shown bench-pressing at an outdoor beach gym in Trailer 2. Lucia is shown sparring with a punching bag (with wrapped fists) and fighting in an underground cage match, throwing a high kick at an opponent inside a steel cage. These activities are also discussed in the side activities article.
Whether gym workouts directly affect character physique (as in GTA: San Andreas, where gym visits increased CJ's muscle mass and overeating made him gain weight) has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar. Jason's build varies noticeably across trailer scenes, which could indicate either a dynamic body system or simply different points in the story. PC Gamer's analysis specifically asked: "are these just cutscenes or will exercise improve our stats?"
Accessories
Several accessory types are visible across the trailers and confirmed by feature guides.
Accessory | Details |
|---|---|
Wristwatches | Playable characters wear wristwatches that show real in-game time (confirmed by GTABase) |
Jewelry | Lucia's gold hoop earrings and boxing glove pendant necklace appear consistently across outfits |
Hats and caps | Jason is frequently seen in backward caps; multiple styles visible |
Sunglasses | Visible on multiple characters in trailer scenes |
Bandanas | Lucia wears a dark red paisley bandana in one outfit; multiple styles used as robbery masks |
Adaptive Animation Patent
Rockstar filed a patent for adaptive animation technology that directly relates to character customization. The patent describes a system that accounts for unique body proportions in real time, allowing clothing and accessories to respond naturally to different physiques. This addresses clipping issues from previous games where clothing would pass through a character's body or accessories would float unnaturally.
The patented technology automates animation adjustments for characters of different heights, builds, and body types without requiring matched motion capture actors for every possible variation. If implemented in GTA VI, this would allow players to customize body shape without the visual glitches that have historically plagued character customization in open-world games.
