Combat System

Added endgame and post-game section, Weapon-fight design rule, and reward-matching principle
Final Fantasy VII Revelation uses the Remake series’ acclaimed hybrid battle system, letting players customize combat by switching between real-time action and a slower, command-driven Tactical Mode. For the finale the system is expanded and refined with new playable characters and powerful new abilities.
Battles flow in real time as characters attack, dodge, and use abilities, while Tactical Mode lets players slow the action to carefully select commands, spells, and items. Players can switch between party members on the fly during a fight.
Addition | Detail |
|---|---|
New playable characters | Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind bring all-new movesets to the party. |
FITS outfits | The FITS system equips job-inspired outfits that grant new movesets in battle. |
New abilities | The reveal promises powerful new abilities layered onto the returning system. |
Synergy Abilities | The team-up Synergy Abilities carried over from the previous entry return in an expanded form. The director has said they are designed to give players freedom in how they pair characters rather than funneling everyone toward a single optimal combination. |
Summons and Materia | The series’ customization through Materia returns as a build-crafting layer alongside the FITS system. Summon Materia is the one type named so far, through the carry-over save bonuses below. |
Players who carry over save data from the earlier entries unlock bonus Summon Materia for Revelation: a Chocobo and Moogle summon, and a Phoenix summon.
Combat is not limited to human-scale foes. Enormous Weapons roam the world and stand among the largest threats the party will face as it explores. The director has described these as set-piece battles with mechanics unique to each Weapon, including one fought with the world map itself serving as the arena. For where these battles take place, see Exploring the Planet.
The director has set out the rule the team works to for these fights: the series' own combat system stays at the base of every Weapon battle, built on what the three games have layered up, with any extra gadgets or one-off mechanics added on top of that foundation rather than replacing it. A Weapon fight may open with a short minigame stretch to vary the pacing, but the core of the encounter is meant to pay off the party a player has actually built.
Revelation is built with a substantial endgame, which the director has described as a point of difference from the two earlier entries. Where players chasing a stiffer challenge in those games were generally pointed toward a second run through, Revelation makes its hardest content reachable inside the first one, once the party is strong enough to take it on. The team has said there is more post-game content than in the previous entry, including encounters pitched above the final boss, and a chapter select option is included alongside it.
Diversions return alongside the main combat, with their difficulty adjusted and reworked to fit the finale. The collectible card game Queen’s Blood comes back in an enhanced form, this time with a dedicated storyline that follows Red XIII rather than Cloud. Minigames tied to parts of the story beyond the previous entry, such as snowboarding in the frozen north, are being reimagined so they connect to the narrative. The director has said minigame rewards tied to combat and character progression have been rethought, so they are no longer required to power up the party, and players can choose to skip specific minigames they do not enjoy. The overall number of minigames is held at parity with or above the previous entry rather than being cut, in keeping with the original game's reputation for plentiful side content.
Among the returning diversions is the slap fight between Tifa Lockhart and Scarlet, confirmed as a minigame for the finale. The director has said it returns in a grander form than the brief exchange in the original game and is handled with care as a moment fans have long anticipated.
Rewards are matched to the activity that earns them. The director has said that on the previous game's world map players often felt pushed into content they did not enjoy because it gated something they wanted, so in Revelation a reward that helps in battle is earned through battle and a new Queen's Blood card is earned at Queen's Blood. The intent is that players can ignore the diversions they have no appetite for without falling behind.
