Character customization article from Developer Direct confirmation and press coverage
Character customization was confirmed at the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2026. You create your hero from scratch.
Confirmed options include:
Gender selection (no locked gender, same as Fable 2 and 3)
Multiple character head presets
Skin tone
Ethnicity
Body type
Hair styles
Tattoos
Scars
Playground Games said the goal is to let players "craft the character they idealize for this magical journey." Beyond the initial creation screen, your hero's appearance can be changed through clothing and equipment found throughout the game.
Clothes, shoes, and armor pieces can be equipped. It is not clear yet whether cosmetic items also affect stats or if fashion and function are separate systems. Earlier Fable games treated clothing as mostly cosmetic with some social effects (wearing certain clothes changed NPC reactions).
In previous Fable games, your character's body changed based on your play style. Using melee made you buff. Using magic made you thin and glowing. Being evil gave you horns. All of that is gone. Your appearance stays as you set it. See Reputation for how the game handles morality differently this time.
