The Corrosion is the plague that drives the story of Edge of Memories. The store page calls it "a plague of unparalleled proportions" that "has already ravaged the Astryan continent". It now threatens Avaris, a continent on the other side of the world that had been spared until the events of the game.

The Corrosion transforms living things. According to the store copy, it turns fauna, flora and humans into "grotesque abominations". As of October 2026, official material had named few specific enemies and had not said which of them are Corrosion creatures; the team's post-demo update mentions crab enemies, and an August 2025 developer post mentions a fight against a giant crab.
The reveal press release lists "a world plagued by disease" among the game's themes, alongside the exodus of peoples and the need to adapt to a changing environment.
Avaris was home to nomadic peoples. The store page says they "now stand on the brink of extinction" and describes nomadic civilizations forced to migrate. A February 2026 developer post adds that many have been pushed into a settled life, taking root in the parts of the continent the Corrosion has not yet claimed. The store copy also mentions a people "who have chosen to await death while celebrating life".
Eline fights the Corrosion as a Soul Whisperer, but she also carries it. After a mysterious encounter, a dark power wakes inside her and gives her the ability to control the Corrosion within her own body. Official copy also describes a transformation, called Berserk mode in some sources and Black Beast mode in others; see Combat for how it plays.
The plague is not static. The February 2026 developer post explained that the Corrosion advances as time passes in the story, so areas players have already visited can change, with landmarks becoming "almost unrecognisable". The store copy says the game transforms places players have travelled through and creates strange new paths.
Effect on the world | What official material says |
|---|---|
Returning to an area | The Corrosion may have advanced, changing the area and its landmarks |
Corrupted areas | Open up new paths |
Clearing the Corrosion | Eradicating certain elements of it lets players progress further |
How these changes affect level design is covered on the Exploration page, and the wider premise is on the Story page.
As of October 2026, official material had not explained where the Corrosion came from, whether it can be cured, or how it reached Avaris from the Astryan continent. A full list of Corrosion enemies had also not been published.
