Exploration

Initial version (2026-10-14)
Players in Edge of Memories will explore Avaris, a continent in the grip of The Corrosion. The store copy describes a world that changes over the course of the story: "As you progress through the story, the game transforms places you have previously travelled through and creates strange new paths to take." Eline travels with her companions and can ride a Nekaroo to reach places she could not get to on foot.
The developers have been direct about the shape of the world. In a June 2026 reply on the Steam forums, they said the game has "more open sections where you're able to explore more freely, but this isn't an open world". The same reply said there is no climbing or swimming, a limit they put down to the size of the team.
Earlier replies described the levels as more linear than those of Edge of Eternity, the studio's previous game, and as much smaller levels.
A February 2026 developer post explained how the Corrosion affects exploration. The plague advances as time passes in the story, so areas players return to can look very different, with landmarks that are "almost unrecognisable". Corrupted areas open new paths, and eradicating certain elements of the Corrosion lets players progress further.
The same post describes how the continent's nomadic peoples have been pushed into a settled life in the parts of Avaris the Corrosion has not yet claimed.
The Nekaroo is a feline mount. The store page calls it a "loyal feline companion" and says its agility gives access to unreachable areas. The August 2026 Nekaroo gameplay video adds that interacting with pillars scattered through the environment unlocks Nekaroo exploration, revealing new paths and areas. The August 2025 gameplay trailer showed Eline exploring on a Nekaroo and solving puzzles.
A developer post on the game's music mentions riding a Nekaroo through the Kalden-Uzaris desert. The Nekaroo also appears in all three of the game's costume packs, covered on the Companions page.
Location | What official material shows |
|---|---|
Sarlah-Durah | A port city with "idyllic sandy shores" and markets |
Kezal Mountains | Snow-capped peaks |
Kalden-Uzaris | A desert crossed on a Nekaroo |
Story scenes use two formats. The June 2026 developer update said portrait conversations are still used in parts of the game, alongside cutscenes rendered in the game engine. Missing lip sync in some demo cutscenes was one of the issues the team said it was working on for the final release (see Steam Demo).
The score responds to what the player is doing. Each area has its own theme, and a calmer exploration version derived from it plays as players move through the area, with the music shifting again when combat begins. The system is described on the Music and Soundtrack page.
