Revision 1

Combat in Edge of Memories takes place in real time. The developers have described the game as an action game and stated that it is not turn-based, and one of their posts calls it a "fast-paced, third-person Action-JRPG". Eline is the only playable character; her allies fight alongside her but cannot be controlled directly.

Everything on this page comes from store copy, trailers and developer posts written before launch, along with the first chapter shown in the June 2026 demo. Details may change in the final release.

Combos and Dodging

The Steam store page tells players to "String together spectacular combos by alternating between rapid strikes and devastating techniques". The publisher's gamescom 2025 announcement described the same idea as alternating light and heavy attacks.

In a June 2026 developer update, the team said the combat system "relies on perfect dodges and chaining combos" and that it was built entirely new. The studio changed engines for this project, moving to Unreal Engine 5, which is covered on the Development History page.

Companion Skills

Eline's allies add their own attacks to a fight. The store copy says: "Customise your companions, and use their skills wisely to inflict more damage at crucial moments." According to the demo announcement, the first chapter teaches players to trigger powerful attacks from their allies while building combos and dodging enemy abilities.

Ysoris and Kanta, the two named allies, are described on the Companions page.

Berserk and Black Beast Mode

Eline can transform mid-fight. Official sources do not use a single name for this state: some copy calls it Berserk or Berserker mode, while other copy calls it Black Beast mode.

In the store's words, the transformation leads to "earth-shattering blows, which turn into a series of merciless executions". The Story Trailer frames it as something Eline struggles with, describing "Eline's struggle as she confronts her fearsome Black Beast mode". The game's music also reacts when the mode is active (see Music and Soundtrack). Separately, the store premise says a dark power gives her the ability to control The Corrosion within her own body.

Skill Progression

The four-minute Gameplay Overview Trailer released in May 2026 listed three pillars: "Fast-Paced, Tactical Combat", "Deep Skill Progression" and "Vast Exploration". Under skill progression, it said players can customise their abilities to suit their playstyle. A February 2026 developer post also mentioned skills for players to master.

The demo included a crafting tutorial. The developers acknowledged a controller bug in that tutorial and said it was fixed for release. As of October 2026, official material had not explained how crafting works.

Changes After the Demo

Combat feel was one of the subjects of feedback from the Steam Demo. In its June 26, 2026 update, the team said it was working on how enemies react to hits and on the balance between enemy health and Eline's damage, "particularly the crab enemies". An earlier music post also mentions a fight against a giant crab.
