Airship Syndicate

Initial version (2026-09-08)
Airship Syndicate is the independent development studio behind DUST: Origins, and it is also the game's publisher. Development is self-funded, and the studio has stated that the game is coming out regardless of how its crowdfunding campaign performs.
The studio is based in Austin, Texas and was founded in 2014 by veterans of Vigil Games. It is known for a handcrafted art style and for character-driven action games. Before this project it had shipped four titles, which makes DUST: Origins its fifth game by the studio's own count.

Prior shipped titles | Battle Chasers: Nightwar, Darksiders Genesis, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, Wayfinder |
Those earlier titles are listed here only to identify the team. None of their content, characters, systems or settings appear in DUST: Origins, which the studio describes as a new dark science-fiction universe rather than a continuation of anything it has made before.
Joe Madureira is credited as the creator of the setting, working with collaborators across the studio, and the project pairs his art direction with the deliberate combat style the team is known for. The studio has framed the move into science fiction as a deliberate change of register after years spent on fantasy worlds, describing the new setting as darker and meaner than its previous work.
On the studio's own framing, the game is a premium single-player experience rather than a live service, and that positioning is presented as a deliberate choice about the kind of game it wanted to make.
The studio put its own money into the project and has fully self-funded development. A crowdfunding campaign launched alongside the reveal on 25 August 2026, but the studio was explicit that it was not there to determine whether the game ships. It described the campaign as a way to give its community a seat at the table, to improve the game, and to aim higher on polish, scope and community involvement. The game was already in advanced development at the time of the reveal.
Reward categories announced for backers covered digital editions of the game, backer playtest access, original art from Joe Madureira, credits and in-world recognition, a digital soundtrack and art materials, and a range of limited physical collectibles.

The studio has been direct about what it is drawing on. Its love of 1980s and 1990s action science fiction runs through the project: a gritty setting, bulky technology and creatures pitched over the top on purpose. It describes the intended tone as high stakes and high octane, and it has said outright that it does not hold the player's hand.
