Added Pays de l’Oseille as the confirmed second region with The Sunken Ship and its boss encounter, added a region ordering table, and added the publisher’s December 2 spoiler line
11The story of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World starts with two girls and two sick fathers. Square Enix has published the premise in full English on its own channels, along with a Japanese original that matches it, so the opening of the game is unusually well documented for a title that is still months from release.2233The Leaves of Life4455Bianca and Nera are each searching for the Leaves of Life, a fabled plant that is supposed to heal their fathers. They are not traveling together when the search begins. They meet by chance while looking for a cure and decide to work together, and the adventure that follows has them clashing with each other as often as encouraging each other.6677Fluffy and the Kingdom of Witherwood8899One night a strange creature called Fluffy visits the two at their bedsides and tells them to continue the search in another land: the Kingdom of Witherwood, where the leaves are said to grow. What they find there is a kingdom ravaged by malevolent forces, with the Leaves of Life all but wiped out. Fluffy grants the pair the power to befriend monsters, and the quest turns from finding a cure into reviving the leaves themselves. Square Enix sums the goal up as bringing the world of Witherwood back to life, and markets the game with the line "Make The Whole World Bloom".10101111Fluffy is not the only companion who turns up on the journey. Debora and Fizzy also appear over the course of the adventure, and the profiles Square Enix has published for all of them are on Characters.12121313What went wrong with Witherwood14141515Square Enix filled in the cause in August 2026. Witherwood was once lush and fertile, and it stayed that way because of the enduring protection of the Archeagles. Forces of darkness have since taken root in the country and spread destruction across it.16161717The visible form of that decay is meteocite: crystals that absorb the despair of the people and drain the land of its life energy. Meteocite has caused chaos in every corner of the country. The work the adventure is built around is listening to what the people in each place are asking for, breaking the meteocite, and bringing the peace back. The crystals were created by Thespidor, a figure who keeps turning up in front of the pair and whose motives have not been explained; his profile is on Characters.181819192020Witherwood as a base21212222Witherwood is not a single level to clear. It is the base of operations you set out from, and the adventure fans out into a range of separate lands from there. Each field is populated by its own mix of monsters, and each one hides contraptions and dungeons that reward searching every corner.23232424The Waterwing Can25252626The counter to the decay is an artifact called the Waterwing Can, picked up at some point during the adventure, which carries the power to restore life. Scattered across the world are Roots of Creation and Lifebuds, described as shrivelled remnants of the Archeagles' waning power that have had their life energy taken by the forces of darkness.27272828Watering a withered Root of Creation restores its life force, and a restored root then does three jobs. You can Zoom straight to it, which makes the network of restored roots the fast-travel map. You can heal your monsters there. And you can synthesize new ones there, without going back anywhere else; how that works is on Synthesis. A monster wrangler may also turn up near a restored root to challenge you, and beating them earns a reward.29293030Parched Lifebuds are found all over the world. Sprinkling one makes it bloom, and reviving enough of them is said to grant a range of benefits. The same can also be used on the suspicious-looking bushes dotted around the fields, which can give up an item or a rare monster.31313232One wrinkle worth flagging rather than tidying away. Square Enix's own English text uses both Roots of Creation and Root of Life for what appears to be the same thing, in the same passage. Neither spelling has been withdrawn and no other English page settles it, so both are recorded here and neither is treated as the correct one.33333434The fields35353636Square Enix has described the following field types. They were described as environments rather than as places, and most of them still have no published place name. One of them has since been tied to a named region, which is covered below.37373838FieldWhat has been shownVerdant plainsOpen green grassland, the baseline field type shown in the earliest materialIce-bound landA region locked in iceEverlasting-summer beachA tropical coast that stays in summer year roundGiant vegetable plainA sprawling plain where enormous fruits and vegetables grow. You can jump on top of a giant carrot, though wild monsters have the same ideaOcean floorAn undersea area with vivid coral. Square Enix teases a sunken pirate ship somewhere down there39394040The August 2026 material added the layer above those field types. Witherwood is the base of operations, and the adventure travels out into separate regions. Each region is its own biome and is divided into a number of areas, so a stretch of sun-drenched plain can run straight on into a swamp where the rain never stops. Caves and towers sit inside the fields as dungeons: Square Enix showed an icy tower at the top of a snowy mountain and framed the risk as paid for by the new monsters and treasure inside.41414242Areas announce themselves as you cross into them, with the name drawn across the top of the screen. One of them is The Sogswamp, a rain-soaked stretch of green clifftop above open water, which lines up with the wetland in the example above.434344444545Two regions have names so far, and Square Enix presented them as a sample of the places the pair travel through rather than a complete list.46464747RegionWhat has been describedTaibokuBamboo groves and rice paddies, deliberately unlike Witherwood in feel. Its local landmark is Memory Hall, riddled with traps and tricks built to confuse unwanted visitors.LushlandEnormous fruits and vegetables give colour to its plains, which matches the giant-vegetable field type above. A colossal cabbage or a giant pumpkin can be climbed on top of to see further.4848Official stills also show a stretch of arid red-rock canyon country, with natural stone arches, bare trees and cacti, which does not match any of the field types described in words and has not been placed in a named region.494950+Two further regions were named in September 2026, and with them the order the adventure runs in. Square Enix’s own usage policy calls Pays de l’Oseille "the second region of the game", and the demo copy identifies the first region as the one the protagonists reach at the start, named カレキ地方 in Japanese and rendered as Witherwood in English.51+52+PositionRegionWhat is knownFirstWitherwoodThe kingdom the pair are led to, and the whole of what the free Demo coversSecondPays de l’OseilleScruffy’s country of origin. It is worth setting alongside the sunken pirate ship Square Enix teased as sitting somewhere on the ocean floor: the two have not been stated to be the same wreck, so they are recorded separately here rather than merged.54+55+Where Taiboku and Lushland sit in that order has not been published.56+5057Day and night51585259Time shifts between day and night as you explore. The change is not cosmetic: monsters behave differently as the day goes on, and species appear that were not there earlier. That makes the time of day part of how you plan a recruiting trip, which is covered on Scouting and Recruitment.53605461Looking over the horizon55625663The fields are drawn so the horizon curves gently away from you, and each step forward opens more of the world than you could see a moment before. Square Enix leans on that presentation in its own marketing, framing exploration around not knowing what lies beyond the curve.57645865Your monsters come with you. Any monster you have befriended can walk the field at your side no matter its type or size, which is unusual for a party that also includes creatures large enough to take two slots in a battle formation. The formation rules are on Battle and Party.59666067What has not been named61686269Witherwood was the only place Square Enix had named until August 2026, when two regions, one area whose region has not been stated, a landmark, the castle at the heart of Witherwood and a second country all got names. The two home towns the leads come from, Roundbeck and Mostroferrato, are named in the character profiles but nothing about the places themselves has been published; they are covered on Characters. No town inside Witherwood has been named, and no individual cave or tower has been named, though both are confirmed as dungeon types. The kingdom does now have a named ruler, King Withers, whose profile is on the characters page.63706471Bianca and Nera are described by Square Enix as characters who come from DRAGON QUEST V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. That is the whole of the stated connection. The story above, including the sick fathers and the quest for the Leaves of Life, belongs to this game.65726673Trailer footage67746875The trailers released so far carry a first-party note that their footage comes from the in-development PC version, so what they show is not a final capture of any console build.76+77+A spoiler line the publisher drew78+79+Square Enix’s usage policy sets one dated embargo, and it is specific enough to double as a statement about the shape of the game. Footage of anything past the fight against the powerful enemy aboard The Sunken Ship in Pays de l’Oseille may not be streamed or posted until December 2, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Japan time, the evening before release. Everything up to and including that point, and monster collecting anywhere in the first two regions, is explicitly allowed.80+81+That places the second region’s climax as the point Square Enix considers the story to genuinely begin turning. The policy is summarised on Materials Usage Guidelines.
