Sanctuary

Initial article for the newly added Diablo V, written from the BlizzCon 2026 reveal panel, the Blizzard announcement posts and post-show developer interviews, with every negative dated 13 September 2026.
Sanctuary is the world of Diablo V, and in this entry it has already fallen. Blizzard states the position without hedging: "This is not Sanctuary waiting for the apocalypse. It is already living through one." Diablo rules it from the throne of Westmarch, and the world itself is described as "no longer stable".
Pre-launch article. Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 and is scheduled for Spring 2029. As of 13 September 2026 the game has been public for one day, no playable build has been shown, and Blizzard describes it as "still early in development". The setting has been described in broad strokes only. No city, region, dungeon or landmark below the continent level has been named.
Senior Art Director John Mueller placed the game on a timeline and explained the emotional logic behind it:
"Diablo 5 is set in an era 100 years after Mephisto's defeat. And at the time the game begins, there is an additional 'Lost 7 Years'. The process of finding out what happened during that time and what was lost forms an important part of the storytelling in this title."
"At the end of Diablo 4, players actually saved the world, and Sanctuary recovered. As a result, there was a kind of 100-year golden age. That's why the moment you face a collapsed world once again in Diablo 5 will feel all the more dramatic."
The Lost 7 Years is the gap between that golden age and the state the player finds the world in. Mueller says uncovering what happened in it is a core part of the storytelling, which makes it a deliberate narrative hole rather than an unexplained one. Nothing about its contents has been revealed.
Note on scope: Mueller's statement is a stated relationship to where the series left off. It does not import any earlier game's plot, characters or locations into Diablo V, and this wiki does not treat it as doing so.
The revealed setting is the Western Continent, which Blizzard puts "at the heart of Diablo's reign of terror". Senior Game Director Joe Shely described its scale and condition together: "We're returning to the Western continent, and Westmarch is the center of Diablo's invasion. The continent is essentially greater Westmarch. All of it has been overrun. It's become an outpost of hell."
Westmarch is the only settlement named in any Diablo V material, and it is named as a fallen one: the Heir to Westmarch is described as moving through "the charred remains of a kingdom now transformed into an outpost of Hell". As of 13 September 2026 no other city, region, zone, dungeon or landmark has been named.
The removal of safe hubs is stated as an absolute, not a difficulty setting. Mueller: "One of the biggest changes is that safe towns and welcoming villagers no longer exist. Sanctuary's destruction is that absolute." Shely made the same point from the player's side, saying there are "no towns and safe places waiting to protect you".
That is the stated reason the caravan exists. With nowhere fixed to return to, survival is tied to a group of allies who travel with the player instead, and the caravan can only move to places the player has already made safe.
Blizzard attributes the world's instability to Diablo directly: "Sanctuary itself is no longer stable. Diablo is actively reshaping the world through terror, reflected by a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and reward can change when you return." Mueller went further after the show, saying the overworld itself and not only its dungeons is procedurally generated. See the procedural world for what has and has not been said about that.
The announcement post also describes the world as legible in three layers at once: its ruins tell the story of what was lost, its corruption shows Diablo's present rule, and the encroaching forces of Hell hint at what comes next.
Human population is described as nearly gone. Blizzard: "Few humans have escaped Diablo's rule. Some have bowed before him or joined his cults, while a terrifying few have been corrupted into Dread Commanders and raised to rival the powers of Hell." Those who resist and avoid corruption are said to end up imprisoned in Soul Cages or dragged into the Terror Realm. The survivors who are neither are the people the player gathers into the caravan.
Narrative Director Jennifer Hepler described the design tension this creates: making Sanctuary "so, so dark" while still needing to make it "a place that's worth defending".
