11Dread Commanders are humans who have been corrupted by Diablo and, in Blizzard's words, "raised to rival the powers of Hell". They are the only enemy type named anywhere in Diablo V material as of 13 September 2026.2233Pre-launch article. Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 and is scheduled for Spring 2029. As of 13 September 2026 the game has been public for one day, no playable build has been shown, and Blizzard describes it as "still early in development". Dread Commanders have been described in roughly two sentences of first party copy and one developer remark. No individual has been named and no encounter has been shown.4455What they are6677Blizzard places them at the extreme end of what happens to people under Diablo's rule: "Few humans have escaped Diablo's rule. Some have bowed before him or joined his cults, while a terrifying few have been corrupted into Dread Commanders and raised to rival the powers of Hell."8899Senior Game Director Joe Shely gave a specific measure of that power after the show, saying Dread Commanders have the power of the Dukes of Hell. That phrase is the only indication of where they sit in any hierarchy, and the Dukes of Hell themselves have not otherwise been described in Diablo V material.10101111The spectrum of the corrupted12121313The corrupted are described as one outcome among several, which makes the Dread Commanders a category rather than a faction. From the material published so far, humanity in a fallen Sanctuary falls into four described groups:14141515GroupWhat has been saidThose who bowedSubmitted to Diablo. Shely: "There are hardly any humans who haven't bowed or become cultists."CultistsJoined his cults. The few who avoid both are the survivors the player recruits into the caravan.1616What has not been stated17171818The Dread Commanders are a good illustration of how early this reveal is. As of 13 September 2026 Blizzard has not said:19192020The name of a single Dread Commander. How many there are.Whether they are bosses, a recurring elite enemy, story characters, or all three.Any ability, behaviour or encounter design. What corruption into a Dread Commander involves, or whether it can be reversed.Whether cultists appear as a distinct enemy type.21212222Claims circulating about how Dread Commanders behave in the world are not traceable to anything Blizzard or the development team has said, and are not recorded here.23232424See also25252626DiabloSanctuaryThe Terror RealmDiablo V
