11The caravan is the system that replaces towns, hubs and strongholds in Diablo V. Because Sanctuary has fallen and safe settlements no longer exist, Blizzard says survival is instead tied to "a caravan of allies who travel with you through the scorched wastes".2233Pre-launch article. Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 and is scheduled for Spring 2029. As of 13 September 2026 the game has been public for one day, no playable build has been shown, and Blizzard describes it as "still early in development". The caravan has been described in design terms only. No companion has been given a confirmed personal name, no count has been given, and no recruitment, upgrade or loss mechanic has been detailed.4455Why it exists6677Blizzard states the replacement directly: "With Sanctuary under Diablo's rule, survival is no longer tied to towns or conquered strongholds. Instead, you'll need to build a caravan of allies who travel with you through the scorched wastes." Senior Art Director John Mueller made clear this is not a partial change:8899"One of the biggest changes is that safe towns and welcoming villagers no longer exist. Sanctuary's destruction is that absolute.""The Caravan is a place where hope resides, and a space that shows there's still value in saving this world."1010Vendors and companions at once11111212The caravan is described as carrying both the functional role of a town and a narrative one. Blizzard: "These allies will be both vendors and steadfast companions, a growing community full of stories to discover. They are fascinating characters with pasts, stakes, and scars from surviving in Diablo's Sanctuary."13131414Executive Producer Matt Zitterman set an unusually specific ambition for the writing:15151616"every single character who joins the Caravan has a deep, meaningful personal story... We're aiming for the story of each character who joins the Caravan to feel like a mini-campaign in its own right."1717The phrase "we're aiming for" is the team's own hedge and is preserved here. Related to this, the team said that sidequests in Diablo V come from caravan members rather than from a separate quest-giver population, which follows from there being no villages left to hold quest givers.18181919Moving the caravan20202121Caravan movement is described as a gated activity rather than fast travel. Zitterman:22222323"because Sanctuary itself has become an extremely dangerous world, you can't just move the Caravan wherever you want. Players must go out into the world themselves and establish safe locations for the Caravan to travel to."2424Each move also resets exploration. Mueller said that every time the caravan moves to a new location, "the fog of war rolls back over it, and players must explore the area firsthand to see what lies there". That makes caravan movement the pacing mechanism for the procedural world rather than a convenience.25252626The two companions described27272828Blizzard named two companions by archetype: "Amongst your newfound companions are a former Sister of the Sightless Eye... and a stranded Treasure Goblin searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose."29293030CompanionWhat has been saidA former Sister of the Sightless EyeDescribed by former affiliation only. No personal name, role or mechanic given.A stranded Treasure GoblinDescribed as searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose. No confirmed personal name.3131Neither companion has a confirmed personal name as of 13 September 2026. A name was floated on stage for the Treasure Goblin and flagged in the same breath as possibly not final, so this wiki does not record it. Any name attached to either companion elsewhere should be treated as unconfirmed.32323333What has not been stated34343535How many companions there are, or how they are found and recruited.Whether companions fight alongside the player, or only occupy the caravan.Whether companions can be lost, killed or upgraded. What the caravan physically is, how it is depicted, or whether it is customisable. How the caravan works with other players, since no multiplayer structure has been described at all.36363737See also38383939The procedural worldSanctuaryHeir to WestmarchDiablo V
