Stratagems

Added the Thunderhawk Bombing Run and Orbital Strike and the rule that each Space Marine Commander brings a unique Stratagem
Stratagems in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV are powerful off-map abilities that a player can call on during battle, such as large-scale support powers. They sit on top of the army you raise through Base Building and Resources, giving you a way to influence a fight beyond the units physically on the field.
Rather than being a unit you build, a stratagem is an ability you trigger, with effects that can reach across the battlefield. Pre-release coverage points to large-scale support powers as one example of what they can do. Because they are powerful and called in from off the map, stratagems are positioned as significant tactical tools used at key moments in an engagement.
According to pre-release coverage, stratagems are unlocked once and then remain reusable for the rest of a campaign, rather than being a one-time consumable. This framing is preview-level and has not been fully confirmed, so it should be treated as a pre-release detail that may change before launch. Stratagems also connect to the army's leadership: Commanders anchor a force on the battlefield, and the powers a player brings to bear are part of how a commander-led army fights.
Every faction has one powerful Stratagem that is available regardless of which Commander was chosen, and it is described as capable of devastating a large group of units when used well. That matters in Multiplayer, where Commanders can be disabled entirely in the match settings: turning them off does not strip a faction of its signature move.
Three Stratagems have been named so far. The Space Marines deep dive in October 2026 added two, and said that each of the four Space Marine Commanders brings a unique Stratagem designed to feel thematically appropriate to the faction as a whole. It did not say which Commander carries which.
Stratagem | Faction | Effect |
|---|---|---|
Translocation Science | Teleports up to five units from anywhere on the battlefield to any other visible part of the map | |
Thunderhawk Bombing Run | Turns half of the screen into a blazing fireball, obliterating anything in its path | |
Orbital Strike | Ignites a huge area of the map from orbit; the studio calls it arguably one of the strongest Stratagems in the game |
Dawn of War IV has not yet released. The specifics of stratagems, including the full list available, their individual effects, any costs, and the exact unlock-once-then-reusable behavior, are preview-level and not yet fully detailed. No exact figures are listed here, and the details may change before the game ships.
