Initial version covering location overview, lore significance, Alustin connection, quest walkthrough, puzzles, rewards, and related articles
The Library of Providence is the largest and most significant structure within The Abyss in Crimson Desert. Described in the game's lore as sitting "at the centre of all worlds," the Library is a vast repository of knowledge where "every book is a world." It houses ancient texts that contain revelations about Pywel's creation, the origins of the Crimson Desert, and the true nature of The Abyss itself.
The Library is guarded and maintained by Alustin, an enigmatic alchemist who serves as its keeper. Players first reach the Library during Chapter 1 of the main story, and it remains a location they revisit throughout their journey as new lore fragments are gathered from across Pywel.
The physical heart of the Library is the Axiom Archive, a large domed building on a floating Abyss island accessible from the Hernand region. The broader Library of Providence encompasses the Archive, the surrounding gardens, the Beacon of Reason observatory, and the connected skybridge pathways that lead deeper into The Abyss.
The Library of Providence records the principles of all things and contains the truth of the world. According to Alustin, the Library was created to preserve knowledge that predates the separation between The Abyss and the physical world. Ancient scripts found on lore tablets throughout the Library describe how The Abyss once coexisted with the mortal realm before some catastrophic event split them apart.
Alustin can gradually translate these ancient scripts as players bring lore fragments collected from all five regions of Pywel. These translations reveal historical details about the split between The Abyss and the mortal world, the role of Providence in maintaining cosmic balance, and the forces threatening to unravel that balance.
The Library also holds the key to understanding the mission that once belonged to Gian. Inside the Library, Alustin reveals that stopping the chaos threatening The Abyss was Gian's mission, and that with Gian's death, this responsibility has now passed to Kliff. This revelation connects the Greymane leader's legacy to a supernatural threat facing Pywel that goes beyond the factional conflicts on the surface.
The Library of Providence is located on one of the first floating Abyss islands that players encounter. Access requires entering The Abyss through a portal found inside Hernand Castle, using the Mystical Key obtained earlier in Chapter 1. The Axiom Archive building sits at the end of a walkway, surrounded by garden trees and foliage on the floating island.
An Abyss Nexus fast travel point is available at this location. Once activated, players can return to the Library at any time by opening the Abyss map and selecting the portal. At least two Abyss notes are required to use the teleportation system.
The Library area includes several distinct zones: the main Axiom Archive building, the surrounding gardens with their circular platforms, the skybridge gate leading to the Ethereal Pathway, and the Beacon of Reason observatory at the center of the complex.
Area | Description |
|---|---|
Axiom Archive | The large domed building that serves as the central structure. Players solve the Polar Opposites disk rotation puzzle to gain entry. Contains Alustin's base of operations and the mechanisms for Axiom Force. |
Beacon of Reason | An observatory structure at the center of the Library complex. Kliff meets Alustin here after gaining the Power of the Axiom. The Beacon is where Alustin provides lore translations and reveals Gian's former mission. |
Entrance Gardens | The island platform surrounding the Archive, featuring garden trees, foliage, and circular floor plates. An Abyss Nexus fast travel point is located here. |
Skybridge Gate | A bridge structure connecting the Library to the deeper Abyss areas. Operated using Axiom Force on alignment devices. Leads to the Ethereal Pathway and subsequent puzzle challenges. |
Deep Vault | A sealed section of the Library accessible only after collecting lore fragments from all regions of Pywel. Contains the game's most comprehensive revelation about the connection between The Abyss and the mortal realm. |
The Library of Providence features prominently in the Traces quest arc of Chapter 1. The relevant quests unfold in sequence:
Quest | What Happens |
|---|---|
Kliff obtains a key from an elderly beggar (later revealed to be Alustin in disguise) and uses it to open the portal to The Abyss from Hernand Castle. | |
Upon arriving at the Library, the White Crow grants Kliff the Axiom Force ability. He must rotate two stone disks using Axiom Force to redirect blue energy through a pipe system, unlocking the Axiom Archive building. A cutscene triggers where Kliff meets Alustin. | |
The 12th main mission. Kliff navigates the skybridge gate, activates the Abyss Nexus, moves power cores to pedestals, learns Force Palm from a ghost silhouette, and activates the circular cog mechanism. Rewards include an Abyss Artifact and the Force Palm ability. | |
Woman in White | White Crow the Witch appears after the Abyss Artifact is collected and grants Kliff the Crow's Wing gliding ability, allowing him to leap from the floating island and glide back to Pywel. |
Alustin reappears in the The Words of Alustin quest (the 53rd main mission) as part of the Forbidden Knowledge sub-chapter. A mysterious figure deliberately bumps into Kliff in Hernand and vanishes into the crowd, leaving behind a letter from Alustin. The letter warns about dark emanations sensed at Scholastone Institute and urges Kliff to investigate. This sets up the Forbidden Knowledge questline, which includes six missions: The Words of Alustin, Scholastone, On the Right Path, Gate to the Otherworld, Spire of the Stars, and Obsession and Madness.
The Library of Providence introduces several core gameplay mechanics that remain relevant throughout the rest of the game. The puzzles here serve as tutorials for the Abyss system while still providing a genuine challenge.
The Axiom Force ability is granted by White Crow the Witch when Kliff first approaches the Library. Activated with Tab on keyboard or L3 on controller, Axiom Force allows players to grab and manipulate specific objects using a magical tether projected from Kliff's hand. Players target an object's edge, grab it, and rotate it using WASD or the controller sticks.
The entrance to the Axiom Archive is sealed behind a pipe circuit puzzle. Two stone disks on the ground must be rotated using Axiom Force so that blue energy flows through the pipe system into the building's lock:
Right disk: Rotate so the energy channel runs from the top toward the left (three clockwise rotations or one counter-clockwise rotation).
Left disk: Direct the flow downward into the pipe at the bottom.
Warning: Avoid touching the glowing interactable block near the left altar, as it disrupts power to active elements.
Once both disks are aligned correctly, blue energy courses through the complete circuit, and the Archive doors open.
After entering the Archive, the Abyss Without Balance quest introduces more complex puzzles. The skybridge gate is operated by using Axiom Force on a totem, pulling it and rotating it with the directional controls until it glows blue and the bridge materializes. Power cores (floating blue cubes) must be grappled with Axiom Force and placed on specific pedestals to remove blockades and activate mechanisms.
A blue ghost silhouette demonstrates the Force Palm technique during the Abyss Without Balance quest. Players observe the technique, then use it to slam an Abyss Cell into a wall slot. Force Palm is activated by positioning a power cell with Axiom Force and then punching it into place. This ability becomes permanent and is used in subsequent Abyss challenges and puzzle rooms throughout the game.
Character | Role |
|---|---|
The alchemist and keeper of the Library. First appears disguised as an elderly beggar in Hernand before revealing his true identity at the Beacon of Reason. Translates ancient lore tablets and warns Kliff about threats to The Abyss. | |
A mysterious figure who serves as a bridge between Providence and the rest of the world. Grants Kliff the Axiom Force ability upon his arrival and later bestows the Crow's Wing gliding ability after the Abyss Without Balance quest. | |
The protagonist. Inherits the mission of restoring balance to The Abyss after Gian's death. Visits the Library multiple times throughout the story as new lore becomes available. |
Completing the quests associated with the Library of Providence yields several important rewards:
Reward | Source |
|---|---|
Granted by White Crow upon arrival at the Library. Core ability for all Abyss puzzles. | |
Collected from a monument to the left of the first Abyss Nexus, and another earned by completing the Abyss Without Balance quest. | |
Force Palm | Learned during Abyss Without Balance. A permanent ability for activating mechanisms and solving puzzle rooms. |
Bestowed by White Crow after completing Abyss Without Balance. Enables gliding from any height. |
Activate the Abyss Nexus fast travel point as soon as you arrive. This saves significant travel time on return visits.
The Abyss Artifact near the first Abyss Nexus (to the left of the fork-shaped tower with the glowing laser) is easy to miss. Walk directly up to the monument to collect it automatically.
During the Abyss Without Balance quest, getting knocked into the pit after using Force Palm is intentional, not a failure state. The mechanism shifts from a golden glow to blue when properly activated.
Return to the Library periodically as you explore new regions. Alustin can translate new lore tablets once you bring fragments from across Pywel, progressively revealing deeper story details.
The Deep Vault can only be accessed after gathering lore fragments from all five regions. Plan to complete regional exploration before attempting to unlock it.
