How to Increase Defense
April 21, 2026 at 10:52 PM
Initial version (2026-04-22): Defense increase guide across all game layers.
How to Increase Defense in Crimson Desert is a multi-layered problem that combines four armor slots, three armor classes, refinement levels, reinforcement, Abyss Gear, and buff food. Squeezing every layer pushes the total damage you can take per hit noticeably higher.
Equip all four slots for full defense. Leaving a slot empty forfeits a meaningful chunk of your total DEF total.
Class | Defense vs Class Below | Tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
Plate | Roughly 15% more DEF than Leather | Slowest, highest defense |
Leather | Roughly 20% more DEF than Cloth | Balanced |
Cloth | Baseline | Best mobility and stamina economy |
Take every armor piece to the maximum refinement level at a smithy (up to level 10). See the Weapon Refinement guide for materials; the same process applies to armor.
Reinforcement is a separate, free temporary defense boost applied at the anvil. It resets on certain events, so max it before every major fight.
Socket Fortification I, II, and III Abyss Cores into every armor piece for an additive defense boost:
Tier | Defense per Slot |
|---|---|
I | +3 Defense |
II | +6 Defense |
III | +9 Defense |
These bonuses stack across all four armor pieces. Fortification Gears begin unlocking in Chapter 3.
Accessories (rings, earrings, necklaces) can also be refined for additional stats.
Elemental Resistance foods grant temporary defense against specific damage types and are essential for elemental bosses.
Equip all 4 armor slots with the highest-tier gear you have access to (Plate for max defense).
Refine every piece to level 10.
Max Reinforcement at the anvil before every major fight.
Socket Fortification Abyss Gears in every slot, I to III as they unlock.
Eat element-resistance food when heading into an elemental boss fight.
