Groks

Initial version with location, guild background, and black market mechanics
Groks is a vendor and veteran of the Goldleaf Merchant Guild who operates from the Goldleaf Tradepost in the Hernand region. The guild dispatched him to oversee discreet deals that sit on the line between legal and illegal commerce. Groks handles covert transactions that the guild's public-facing traders cannot touch, serving as the bridge between official Goldleaf operations and their shadow economy.
His position has recently grown more dangerous. Local bandits have begun threatening the Goldleaf Tradepost and bear a specific grudge against Groks. The problem is that he cannot report these threats to authorities without exposing his own illicit dealings, leaving him stuck between personal safety and business secrecy.
Groks operates at the Goldleaf Tradepost, one of several commercial outposts controlled by the Goldleaf Merchant Guild across the Hernand region. The Tradepost is located east of the main Hernand settlement, in territory where the guild maintains a strong commercial presence. The area sees regular merchant traffic but also attracts bandits due to the valuable goods passing through.
Groks deals in black market trade goods. His inventory includes items that cannot be purchased from legitimate Goldleaf merchants, ranging from contraband materials to restricted trade products. Because he operates in the shadow economy, his stock rotates based on what the guild's covert supply chains deliver. Prices tend to be higher than standard market rates, reflecting the risk premium of illegal goods.
The Goldleaf Merchant Guild is the largest merchant guild in Hernand, run entirely by goblins. The organization prioritizes financial gain over ethical considerations and is widely regarded as the embodiment of goblin materialism. The guild controls multiple locations across the region, including the Goldleaf Guildhouse, Goldleaf Tradepost, Goldleaf Trading Post, Goldenfist Arena, and Thinker's Meadow.
Groks represents the guild's covert operations arm. While traders like Ugmon handle legitimate business at the Goldleaf Guildhouse, Groks manages the deals that need to stay off the official ledger. This division of labor allows the guild to profit from both sides of the law.
Trading with Groks falls under the Law System's monitoring. The risk level depends on what you buy and whether you are observed. The Goldleaf Tradepost sees enough legitimate traffic that a discreet purchase from Groks may not immediately draw suspicion. However, carrying contraband items in your inventory during guard inspections can result in confiscation and reputation penalties.
Groks is one of five black market vendors in the Hernand region, alongside Edmond, Grimrak, Prox, and Serge. Each specializes in different contraband categories, so players looking to build a diverse illegal inventory will need to visit multiple dealers.
Groks's location at the Goldleaf Tradepost means you can combine a visit to him with legitimate trading business, reducing the number of trips to remote vendor locations.
Watch for bandits in the area. The Tradepost's security situation has deteriorated, and encounters near Groks's location are common.
Because Groks cannot go to the authorities about his bandit problem, this situation may develop into a quest opportunity. Check back with him periodically for new dialogue.
If your Law System standing is already low, consider buying from Groks quickly and leaving before guards patrol through. Timing your visit can minimize exposure.
