Comprehensive Desert Cat pet article with variants, trust items, equipment, and tips

The Desert Cat is a cat breed that can be registered as a pet in Crimson Desert. What sets the Desert Cat apart from every other cat breed is its habitat: it is found exclusively in the Crimson Desert region, the arid expanse that gives the game its name. All other cat breeds (such as the Cat, Fat Cat, Kitten, and Slim Cat) spawn in settlements throughout Pywel, but the Desert Cat does not appear in those areas at all.
Because the Crimson Desert region is reached later in the game, the Desert Cat is one of the last cat breeds most players will encounter. Its tough, sand-colored coat reflects its adaptation to harsh desert conditions, and it comes in two distinct color variants.
The Desert Cat has two coat variants. Both behave identically and share the same trust items, equipment slots, and taming requirements. The only difference is their appearance.
Image | Variant | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Desert Cat | The standard variant with a warm sandy coat suited to the desert environment. |
| Patchy Cat | A variant with irregular patches of color across its fur, giving it a mottled appearance. |
Taming a Desert Cat follows the same trust system as all other pets. You need to accumulate 100 trust with the animal before it can be registered as your companion. Trust is built through two main interactions.
Petting: +5 trust per interaction, up to 25 trust per in-game day (5 interactions). To pet a cat, hold the button prompt to pick it up first, then press the pet button.
Feeding: Up to 3 feeds per in-game day. Trust gained depends on the type of food offered (see the Trust Items section below).
At best, you can gain roughly +55 trust per in-game day with cats (25 from petting plus 30 from three standard feeds at +10 each). This means taming a Desert Cat takes a minimum of two in-game days with consistent petting and feeding. Using the cat's favorite food, Egg, which grants +35 trust per feed, significantly speeds up the process: three Egg feeds (+105) plus a day of petting (+25) can exceed the 100 trust threshold in a single day.
Once the Desert Cat reaches 100 trust, set it down and hold Square (PlayStation) or E (PC) to select the "Take in" prompt. The cat is then permanently registered as your pet.
The following items can be fed to the Desert Cat to build trust. The cat's favorite food is Egg, which grants the highest base trust at +35 per feed. Legendary Fish provide the largest single trust gain at +100 but are far more difficult to obtain. Cooked dishes from the Field Iron Griddle and Field Cooking Pot provide +20 trust each.
Category | Trust | Examples |
|---|---|---|
Egg (Favorite) | +35 | Egg |

Like all cat pets, the Desert Cat can be equipped with pet armor to increase its defensive stats and reduce the chance of injury during combat. Cat equipment uses two slots: a Helm slot and an Outfit slot.
Equipment | Slot | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Cat Plate Helm | Pet Helm | Standard protective headgear for cats. |
Cat Plate Armor | Pet Outfit | Standard protective body armor for cats. |
Peddler Cat Hat | Pet Helm | Cosmetic helm with a merchant-style appearance. |
Peddler Cat Outfit | Pet Outfit | Cosmetic outfit matching the Peddler Cat Hat. |
Uniform Cat Hat | Pet Helm | Formal uniform-style helm for cats. |
Uniform Cat Outfit | Pet Outfit | Formal uniform-style body outfit for cats. |
Equipping armor on your Desert Cat is especially important for the Crimson Desert region, where enemy encounters tend to be more challenging.
Once registered, the Desert Cat provides the same core benefits as every other pet breed.
Auto-looting: The Desert Cat automatically picks up loot dropped by defeated enemies during combat, saving you from collecting each item manually.
Exploration companion: Your registered cat follows you across Pywel as you explore the open world.
Permanent companion: Once tamed, the Desert Cat is permanently registered. There is no risk of losing it.
Pets can sustain injuries during combat encounters. An injured Desert Cat cannot run and will move slowly until healed. Use Healing Force Palm to restore your pet's health and get it back to full mobility. Keeping your cat armored with the equipment listed above reduces how often it gets hurt in battle.
Stock up on Eggs before traveling to the Crimson Desert region. Three Egg feeds in a single day grant +105 trust, which combined with petting can max out trust in a single in-game day.
After picking up the cat, drop food from your inventory before putting the cat down. This way the cat walks directly to the food and does not wander off.
Craft the Companionship enchant on Abyss gear to increase trust gain speed with pets. The Solidarity enchant increases trust gain with all NPCs and animals, including the Desert Cat.
Check settlements in the Crimson Desert region at different times of day. Animals can spawn in different locations depending on the in-game hour.
If you already have another pet registered, you can switch your active pet from the Inventory menu at any time.
