Sword and Shield

The Sword and Shield, also written Sword & Shield, is one of the three weapons available to the Swordsman, alongside the Greatsword and the Dual Blades. It is the defensive half of most Swordsman loadouts and the safest of the three for learning the game defensive timing.
The Sword and Shield is the tanking option, though it is not a damage-free one. Its core tool is Block: holding it reduces incoming damage, and timing it to the moment an attack connects converts it into a parry that negates the hit and opens a counterattack window. Not every attack can be countered, so the weapon rewards learning enemy patterns rather than holding guard permanently. See Parrying for the underlying mechanic and its interaction with enemy stamina bars.
Stamina is the limiting resource. Blocking spends it, a passive refunds part of the cost after a successful block, and drawing the weapon raises the Stamina ceiling for a short window. The weapon skill set also feeds Rage defensively: one passive generates it on every hit taken and more on every block, which is the opposite of how the Greatsword builds the same resource.
Threat is the other half of the package. The main combo stacks threat upward, a gap-closer taunts everything it passes through for nine seconds, and hands-on accounts of the closed beta describe both taunt and an aggro-generation increase on the weapon. That, rather than any armor restriction, is why a Swordsman can hold a tank role in group content.
Shield types are deliberately undifferentiated in Chrono Odyssey. Chrono Studio confirmed in a February 2026 developer question and answer session that shields are not split into distinct categories with separate handling, so a shield is a stat and appearance choice rather than a sub-playstyle choice.
Every skill name, damage figure, resource cost and cooldown in this section was recorded during the closed beta that ran from June 20 to 22, 2025. Chrono Studio has since said that all classes will be rebalanced around the Matrix System, so read the table as a snapshot of that build rather than as current values. As of 2026-09-11 no revised skill numbers have been published for any class.
The Sword and Shield carried four active skill lines and five passives in that build, matching the four skill slots each weapon holds alongside the class-common skills. Each skill line ran across three tiers. The first tier could be ranked up three times; the second and third tiers were single unlocks that either extended the skill with a follow-up or enhanced what it already did.
Skill | Type | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|
Bash and Slash I | Active | A shield bash into a sweeping slash for 243% damage at a cost of 28 Rage. Raises Threat for 15 seconds, stacking up to five times. |
Bash and Slash II | Enhancement | Recovers 10 Stamina on landing. |
Bash and Slash III | Enhancement | Raises Defense by 10% on landing, stacking up to five times. |
Charging Thrust I | Active | Charges forward for 152% damage in a narrow area and Taunts the enemies hit for 9 seconds. 25-second cooldown. |
Charging Thrust II | Enhancement | Lowers the attack of enemies hit by 20% for 7 seconds. |
Charging Thrust III | Enhancement | Grants a 20% chance to reset the Charging Thrust cooldown when blocking an attack, on a 3-second cooldown. |
Shield Bash I | Active | 150% damage with Knockdown. Grants Super Armor for the duration. 25-second cooldown. |
Shield Bash II | Enhancement | Cuts the movement speed of targets hit by 70% for 8 seconds. |
Shield Bash III | Enhancement | Generates 30 Rage on landing. |
Earthshatter I | Active | Leaps into the air and crashes down with the shield for 167% damage to nearby enemies, inflicting a 2-second Stun. Grants Super Armor for the duration. 35-second cooldown. |
Earthshatter II | Enhancement | With Rage above 60%, adds damage equal to 49% of the player physical defense. |
Earthshatter III | Enhancement | Grants a shield absorbing damage equal to 70% of HP, and clears all crowd control except Knockdown and Temporal Isolation, the Chronotector ability that freezes enemies in place. |
Passive | Max ranks | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|
Circumvent | 3 | Cuts incoming damage by 28% for 5 seconds after using a Sword and Shield skill. |
Resilience | 3 | Generates 4 Rage on taking a hit, and 2 more on blocking an enemy attack. |
Shield Expert | 1 | Raises maximum Stamina by 30 for 20 seconds on switching to the Sword and Shield. |
Tide Turner | 1 | Reduces the Stamina cost of Block by 30% after a successful block. |
Guardian's Fury | 1 | Shield skills, listed as Shield Bash, Bash and Slash, Earthshatter and Parry, deal additional damage equal to 59% of physical defense. |
Guardian's Fury is the clearest indication that Parry was a discrete slotted skill on this weapon in that build rather than only a property of the block input, since it is named alongside the three shield actives.
In the private focus group test Chrono Studio ran in February 2025, well before the June closed beta, the Sword and Shield was the second most chosen weapon across the whole roster, behind the bow and ahead of the crossbow. The developers read that as testers reaching for ranged or balanced attack and defense options to keep combat stable while learning the game. Those figures come from that earlier test only and were never restated for the closed beta.
The Sword and Shield carries its own Weapon Mastery track that rises through use, sits apart from character level, and is retained across swaps. Mastery unlocks the weapon skills and gates its Matrix System paths: four per weapon, twelve across the class. The Matrix was not present in the June 2025 build. Chrono Studio has also confirmed there is no dedicated support class in Chrono Odyssey, and that support effects come from Matrix nodes on weapons, which makes the Sword and Shield Matrix paths the likely home of any group utility the Swordsman eventually gets.
Swordsman: the class that wields the Sword and Shield.
Greatsword: the burst damage pairing option.
Dual Blades: the sustained damage pairing option.
Armor: armor types, rarity tiers and enhancement.
Combat: blocking, stagger and the wider combat loop.
