Greatsword

The Greatsword is one of the three weapons available to the Swordsman. The other two are the Dual Blades and the Sword and Shield. As with every class in Chrono Odyssey, a player equips two of the three at a time and swaps between them in real time, so the Greatsword is nearly always played as half of a pair rather than on its own. See Dual Weapon Switching for how that pairing works.
The Greatsword is the burst option in the Swordsman kit. It swings slowly and commits hard, trading attack speed for damage that arrives in large single chunks. Charged attacks push that further, and the weapon leans on Super Armor and Hyper Armor to force a swing through incoming damage rather than backing out of it. Several of its skills carry knockdown, knockback or stun, so it doubles as the class control tool in crowds.
Bleed is the weapon signature. Multiple Greatsword skills apply it or pay out extra against a target already bleeding, and the headline attack hits substantially harder into that state. A common closed-beta pattern was to open on the Greatsword to stack Bleed and land a charged hit, then swap to the paired weapon and cash the setup in.
Charged attacks are also the most efficient way the Swordsman builds Rage. One Greatsword passive lowers the Stamina those charges cost while scaling the Rage they return to the charge level, which makes the weapon the battery of a loadout: build on the Greatsword, spend after the swap.
Every skill name, damage figure, resource cost and cooldown in this section was recorded during the closed beta that ran from June 20 to 22, 2025. Chrono Studio has since said that all classes will be rebalanced around the Matrix System, so read the table as a snapshot of that build rather than as current values. As of 2026-09-11 no revised skill numbers have been published for any class.
The Greatsword carried five active skill lines in that build, but a weapon only holds four skill slots at a time alongside the class-common skills shared across the Swordsman, so one line always had to be left out. Each skill line ran across three tiers. The first tier could be ranked up three times; the second and third tiers were single unlocks that either extended the skill with a follow-up or enhanced what it already did.
Skill | Type | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|
Power Slash I | Active | A wide slash for 172% damage at a cost of 30 Rage. Carries a 50% chance to inflict Bleed on a target that is not already bleeding, and deals 224% damage instead against a bleeding target. |
Power Slash II | Active | Adds a second slash follow-up for 214% damage, or 277% against a bleeding target. |
Power Slash III | Enhancement | Raises Power Slash damage at the cost of extra Rage. |
Impaling Kick I | Active | Pierces an enemy for 122.5% damage, then follows with a kick for 123% damage that inflicts Knockback. 26-second cooldown. |
Impaling Kick II | Enhancement | Inflicts Bleed, stacking up to five times. |
Impaling Kick III | Enhancement | Raises the damage of both the initial strike and the follow-up kick, and generates 40 Rage on landing a hit. |
Double Slash I | Active | Two swift attacks for a combined 280% damage. 28-second cooldown. |
Double Slash II | Active | Unlocks a finishing follow-up for 280% damage that inflicts Knockdown. |
Double Slash III | Enhancement | Grants a 30% chance to reset the cooldown when the finishing follow-up lands. |
Sunder I | Active | 276% damage to nearby enemies with Knockdown, scaling up with remaining Rage. Grants Super Armor for the duration. 50-second cooldown. |
Sunder II | Enhancement | Cuts the Sunder cooldown to 30 seconds. |
Sunder III | Enhancement | Widens the radius and adds damage against enemies affected by Bleed. |
Charging Slash I | Active | A shoulder charge for 73% damage with a 2-second Stun, followed by an upward swing for 143% damage. Grants Super Armor for the duration. 30-second cooldown. |
Charging Slash II | Enhancement | Cuts the Charging Slash cooldown to 15 seconds. |
Charging Slash III | Enhancement | Raises the follow-up swing to 186% damage and doubles the Stun duration. |
Passive | Max ranks | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|
Greatsword Mastery | 3 | Increases basic attack damage by 30%. |
Rancor | 3 | Generates 12 Rage on taking damage, on a 3-second cooldown. |
Warrior's Draw | 1 | Grants Hyper Armor for 10 seconds on switching to the Greatsword, on a 30-second cooldown. |
Balanced Strike | 1 | Reduces the Stamina cost of charged attacks and increases the Rage they generate according to charge level. |
Warrior's Draw is the Greatsword half of the class swap passives. Every Swordsman weapon fires one on being drawn, which is the mechanical nudge toward using both halves of a loadout instead of parking on one.
The Greatsword has its own Weapon Mastery track, separate from character level and retained when the weapon is unequipped. Mastery gates which of the weapon skills are available and, on top of that, which Matrix System paths can be pursued. The Matrix gives every weapon four progression paths, twelve across the class. It was not in the June 2025 build; it was announced afterwards and the studio has said the rebalance will be built around it.

Dual Blades: the sustained damage pairing option.
Sword and Shield: the defensive pairing option.
