Chain Blades

The Chain Blades are one of the three weapons available to the Berserker in Chrono Odyssey. They are the class's reach option: a pair of bladed chains that close distance, drag enemies into melee range and apply Chill, and they are the weapon that builds the Berserker's Bloodthirst stacks. A Berserker equips two of the class's three weapons at a time, so taking Chain Blades means leaving either the Twin Axes or the Battle Axe behind.
Chain Blades were playable during the first Closed Beta Test from June 20-22, 2025. Everything labelled June 2025 on this page was recorded in that build and comes from a single community record of it. Chrono Studio has since stated that all classes will be re-evaluated for combat balance alongside the Matrix System, so the names, percentages and resource costs below are a point-in-time snapshot rather than launch behaviour.
Chain Blades support a quick, agile style built on mobility and gap-closing, and they work for both single-target and area damage. They reach further than either axe, which is the main reason to bring them: the Berserker has no ranged option at all, so the Chain Blades are the closest thing the class has to pressure at distance.
They are also the class's clearest risk-versus-reward weapon. Several Chain Blades skills cost health to use, and the payoff is Bloodthirst, which the Berserker spends for a large damage spike. Playing them well means accepting a lower health pool in exchange for a bigger finisher.
Bloodthirst is the Berserker's secondary resource, stacking up to five and tracked alongside Rage. In the June 2025 build the Chain Blades were the weapon that generated it: the basic crossing slash granted a stack, and several passives and enhancements added further chances to gain one. Stacks are spent rather than decayed, and the Chain Blades finisher is what spends them. See Class Resources for how it sits against the class's other resource.
Bloodthirst is a different mechanic from the Assassin's Bloodlust despite the similar name. The two do not interact and are not the same resource.
The recorded scaling on Chilling Strike, the finisher that consumes every stack held:
Stacks consumed | Added damage |
|---|---|
1 | +163.0% |
2 | +179.4% |
3 | +195.7% |
4 | +220.1% |
5 | +244.5% |
A separate passive raises critical damage while the stacks sit at maximum, which gives a reason to hold the stacks for a moment rather than dumping them the instant the bar fills. No per-stack health regeneration or attack figure has ever been published.
The build recorded from the closed beta lists each skill as a base active followed by two enhancement tiers, numbered I, II and III. Each entry carries the rank notation used in the recorded build sheet, such as 3/3 or 1/3. The sheet does not explain the notation; it reads as points invested against a skill's maximum ranks.
One thing stands out in the record: the Chain Blades list carries five active lines against the four skill slots a weapon had in that build, so a Chain Blades user had to leave one out. The other two Berserker weapons list exactly four.
Skill | Ranks | Type | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|---|
Sweeping Slash I | 3/3 | Active | A wide crossing slash dealing a total of 248.6% damage and granting Bloodthirst. |
Sweeping Slash II | 1/1 | Enhancement | Grants Super Armor for the duration of the slash. |
Sweeping Slash III | 1/1 | Enhancement | Each hit has a 15% chance to grant an additional stack of Bloodthirst. |
Fighting Spirit I | 3/3 | Active | Cuts incoming damage by 70% for 8 seconds and grants Bloodthirst. |
Fighting Spirit II | 1/1 | Enhancement | Recovers 30 Stamina on use. |
Fighting Spirit III | 1/1 | Enhancement | Grants 2 stacks of Bloodthirst on use and clears all crowd control effects. |
Glacial Strike I | 3/3 | Active | A downward strike with a dash to the landing point, dealing a total of 289.1% damage and applying Chill. |
Glacial Strike II | 1/1 | Enhancement | Widens the area of effect and adds a Stun. |
Glacial Strike III | 1/1 | Enhancement | Grants an additional use of the skill. |
Chilling Strike I | 3/3 | Active | A leap attack dealing 130.4% damage. Stuns enemies already affected by Chill for 3 seconds, which makes it the natural follow-up to Glacial Strike. |
Chilling Strike II | 1/1 | Enhancement | Consumes every stack of Bloodthirst held, with damage rising by the number consumed. |
Chilling Strike III | 1/1 | Enhancement | Adds an icy explosion at the point of impact for 54.3% damage to nearby enemies. |
Steel Vortex I | 3/3 | Active | Pulls nearby enemies in, then stomps the ground for a total of 351.4% damage with Knockback. |
Steel Vortex II | 1/1 | Enhancement | The final strike inflicts Knockdown, and each hit has a 30% chance to grant Bloodthirst. |
Steel Vortex III | 1/1 | Active | Landing Sweeping Slash or Chain Cleave cuts the cooldown of Steel Vortex by 1 second. |
Passive | Ranks | Recorded effect |
|---|---|---|
Ruthless | 3/3 | Raises Critical Damage by 40% while Bloodthirst sits at maximum stacks. |
Scrapper | 3/3 | Raises the damage of basic attacks by an additional 30%. |
Lingering Power | 1/1 | Generates 10 additional Rage when Surging Force is used. |
Piercing Cold | 3/3 | Attacks against a Chilled enemy deal up to 34% extra damage, scaling with the number of Chill stacks. |
Two names in that record, Surging Force and Chain Cleave, appear only inside passive and enhancement text and are never listed among the slotted skills, so their exact place in the kit is not recoverable from the June 2025 record.
Chill is the status the Chain Blades trade in. Glacial Strike applies it, Chilling Strike converts it into a 3-second Stun, and Piercing Cold turns accumulated Chill stacks into extra damage from every source. That chain, apply Chill then punish it, is the weapon's core loop and the reason Glacial Strike into Chilling Strike is the sequence most recorded builds lead with.
Drawing a weapon fires a passive tied to that weapon, which is a deliberate nudge toward using both halves of a loadout. As of 2026-09-11 the recorded Berserker tables list a draw passive for the Twin Axes and for the Battle Axe but none for the Chain Blades, so on the available record the Chain Blades are the one Berserker weapon with nothing attached to the draw itself. See Dual Weapon Switching for the full cross-class list.
Chain Blades carry their own Weapon Mastery track, raised by using the weapon and independent of character level, which is what unlocks the skills above. Beyond that, the Matrix System announced after the closed beta gives every weapon four progression paths, twelve across a class's three weapons, so two Berserkers both carrying Chain Blades can end up playing them very differently. The Matrix was not in the June 2025 build, and the node layout has not been published.
