Blight: Survival started as a project by two Scandinavian developers, Mads Christensen and one co-founder, working under the name Haenir Studio. Both still had day jobs when they began development. The fact that the game's initial footage was produced by two people with no outside funding is one of the things that made its later viral success so remarkable.
Development began around 2021 using Unreal Engine 5. The team used Quixel Megascans for environmental assets and focused on establishing the medieval horror atmosphere and combat feel. In August 2022, a first teaser trailer was released showing armored knights in a desolate, Blight-consumed landscape.
On November 3, 2022, Haenir Studio released a 5-minute gameplay reveal trailer. It went viral. Within three days, the Steam page had received 1.25 million visits. The trailer spread across TikTok, YouTube, and gaming media. The production quality confused people. Many viewers assumed it was a AAA project, not a two-person indie game.
Post-trailer stats tell the story: 1,500 Discord members, 12,000 Twitter followers, 8,000 newsletter subscribers, 70,000 TikTok followers. Steam wishlists surged 190%, jumping from #166 to #48 on Steam's Top Wishlisted chart. GamesRadar described the footage as looking "like a day in the life of an Elden Ring guard."
By March 2023, the game had accumulated 650,000 Steam wishlists. The team expanded from 2 to 12 veteran developers. A Steam community post announced the growth and outlined the studio's ambitions now that they had the resources and team to pursue them. Later, an additional 10 developers were onboarded.
Behaviour Interactive, the Canadian studio behind Dead by Daylight (with over 1,300 employees), announced they would publish Blight: Survival. This wasn't just a publishing deal. Behaviour Interactive also serves as a co-development partner, providing resources and expertise to supplement Haenir Studio's team. For a two-person indie project, landing one of the largest Canadian gaming studios as a partner was a major validation.
The year focused on foundational systems, tools, combat foundations, and visual benchmarking. Multiple developer updates were posted (September and December 2025). A Discord AMA in June 2025 gave the community direct access to the developers. The December 2025 update confirmed public playtests for 2026.
2026 is planned as the year of reveals, playtests, and content ramp-up. The developers have been open about the timeline. The game is "more than a year away" from launch as of late 2025, putting the earliest realistic release window around 2027.
The Discord community has grown to over 40,000 members. Community involvement goes beyond standard forums. A community poll on enemy types directly influenced the official design direction. Fan art, memes, and active discussion have maintained interest despite the extended development period. Some community frustration exists over the long wait, with Steam threads titled "4 Years on wishlist" and "Still waiting..." reflecting the tension between excitement and impatience.
Haenir Studio is based in Scandinavia (described as Icelandic in some sources). The studio's growth from 2 to 22+ developers tracks with the game's trajectory from passion project to professionally published title. The name "Haenir" comes from Norse mythology, fitting for a Scandinavian studio working on dark medieval fiction.
