Feng Ji (冯骥) is the CEO and founder of Game Science, the Chinese studio behind the Black Myth series. He is the primary creative driving force behind both Black Myth: Wukong and Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Feng Ji previously worked at Tencent before leaving to start Game Science. He and several colleagues left major Chinese tech companies because they wanted to make single-player, narrative-driven games — a category that barely existed in the Chinese industry at the time, which was overwhelmingly focused on free-to-play mobile and online titles.
Building a AAA single-player studio in China was considered a quixotic goal. The domestic market had little infrastructure for it, and the conventional wisdom was that Chinese players would not pay full price for a single-player game. Wukong's 28 million copies sold proved that wrong in a big way.
Feng Ji has been unusually open about the emotional arc behind Zhong Kui's creation. After spending nearly twenty years working toward Wukong's release, he described feeling "in a haze" once it shipped. Rather than immediately producing Wukong DLC, he decided the team should start fresh.
In his own words, he wanted to "experiment freely, boldly, without constraints, and from zero." He has also said he plans to return to Wukong eventually, approaching it "in a more complete and polished form" after the creative reset that Zhong Kui represents.
At Gamescom 2025, described Zhong Kui's development status as "little more than an empty folder."
Promised "a new hero, new gameplay, new visuals, new technology, and a new story" — signaling major mechanical differentiation from Wukong.
Said he has "absolutely no idea" when the game will be ready.
