No gameplay footage for Black Myth: Zhong Kui has been released. Everything below is based on official statements from Game Science and educated speculation based on the source mythology and the first game's design.
CEO Feng Ji described the game as having "a new hero, new gameplay, new visuals, new technology, and a new story." The emphasis on "new gameplay" is notable — it signals that Zhong Kui will not play like a reskinned Wukong. The combat system is being built around the new protagonist's identity and mythology rather than adapting Wukong's staff-based moveset.
Game Science has also mentioned "innovative combat combined with traditional martial arts" in their promotional materials.
Zhong Kui is traditionally associated with two weapons: a ghost-slaying sword and a fan. This dual-weapon setup is a major departure from Wukong's single staff. It opens the door for weapon-switching mechanics, stance systems, or complementary movesets where the sword handles different situations than the fan.
In Chinese martial arts and opera, the fan is not a joke weapon. It is associated with scholarly warriors and has its own fighting style (Shan Zi Gong). A fan in the hands of a supernatural being could channel wind, fire, or spiritual energy. Paired with a heavy demon-slaying sword, the contrast between the two could define the game's combat rhythm.
Zhong Kui commands 80,000 ghosts. In gameplay terms, that suggests summoning or minion-based abilities. The Gamescom trailer showed small goblin attendants following Zhong Kui — these could function as combat companions, summonable abilities, or support units.
His role as a ghost hunter also suggests exorcism or binding mechanics. Where Wukong's transformations let him become different creatures, Zhong Kui might capture and command defeated enemies, or use Taoist rituals as combat techniques.
Black Myth: Wukong's combat centered on a single weapon (the staff) with three stances (Smash, Pillar, Thrust), transformation abilities, and a spirit system. Zhong Kui's different mythology suggests a fundamentally different approach:
Weapons: Sword + fan vs. staff with three stances
Abilities: Ghost summoning and exorcism vs. animal transformations
Tone: Darker, more horror-influenced vs. mythic adventure
Setting: Underworld and mortal world vs. Journey to the West locations
