Platforms and Business Model

Corrected supported languages from nine to four, added the September 2026 network test and playtest listing, recorded the official site move and the ArcheAge IP transfer to Align Studio
ArcheAge Chronicles is confirmed for PC (Steam and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game uses a buy-to-play model with a one-time purchase and no subscription fee. XLGAMES has committed to a no pay-to-win monetization approach, a direct response to the controversies that plagued the original ArcheAge and ArcheAge Unchained. Who publishes the game is currently unsettled, and the section below sets out what each surface says.
The game is built on Unreal Engine 5 and requires substantial hardware:
Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
OS | Windows 10 64-bit minimum, Windows 11 64-bit recommended |
CPU | Intel Core i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600 (minimum); Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5700X (recommended) |
Storage | 100 GB available space |
RAM | 16 GB minimum, 32 GB recommended |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (minimum on the Steam listing) or RTX 2070 SUPER (minimum on the Microsoft Store listing); RTX 4060 Ti (recommended on both) |
The two storefronts publish the same spec sheet with a single line changed. Everything except the minimum GPU matches between them, down to a shared typo in the recommended AMD processor, so this reads as one document published twice rather than two independent claims. Both figures are recorded here with the storefront that carries them.
The game is listed on four storefronts, and each console platform attaches its own requirements to online play.
Platform | Storefront | Requirements and Platform Notes | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
PC | Steam and the Epic Games Store | Windows 10 64-bit minimum, Windows 11 64-bit recommended. The Steam listing still shows the release date as to be announced, with no Early Access designation attached. | ||
PlayStation 5 | PlayStation Store | Online play requires PlayStation Plus and the listing states support for up to 99 online players. Remote Play is supported, along with DualSense vibration and trigger effects. In-game purchases are listed as optional. Korean coverage additionally reports PS5 Pro enhancement. | ||
Xbox Series X\ | S | Microsoft Store | Listed as optimized for Xbox Series X\ | S. Console online play requires an online multiplayer subscription, sold separately. |
A second Steam entry, listed as ArcheAge Chronicles Playtest, went live on 3 September 2026. It is the build distribution channel for the network test described below rather than a separate product, and it carries no store page, price, or feature list of its own.
The Xbox listing carries a Mature 17+ rating for intense violence, blood and gore, and language, with a note that online interactions are not rated. The Steam listing carries a DEJUS 14 rating for violence and inappropriate language, an IGRS 18 rating for online interaction, violence and horror, and a self-applied 16 rating for the German storefront. Korean coverage records an adults-only classification issued by the country's game rating board on 25 September 2025.
Four languages are listed on the Steam storefront: English, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Korean is the only language with full voice support in addition to interface and subtitles; the other three are interface and subtitles only.
This is a reduction. Earlier listings for the same storefront carried nine languages, adding French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, and Portuguese (Brazil). Those five are no longer listed on either the English or the Korean version of the store page. Whether they were cut, deferred past the first release, or simply pulled from the listing ahead of a scope decision has not been stated.
The buy-to-play model represents a clean break from the original ArcheAge's troubled monetization history. The original game launched free-to-play with aggressive cash shop practices that were widely criticized as pay-to-win. ArcheAge Unchained attempted a buy-to-play conversion but eventually reintroduced cash shop elements. Chronicles is positioned as a fresh start, with the explicit promise that competitive advantages will not be sold. Korean coverage of the July 2026 class reveals restated the same commitment: a package purchase with appearance-focused paid items and pay-to-win elements excluded.
While specific cash shop details have not been fully disclosed, the buy-to-play model with cosmetic-only monetization is standard for this approach. Expected revenue sources include:
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Cosmetic items | character skins, outfit designs, visual effects |
Account services | character slots, name changes, server transfers |
Future expansion DLC | new content areas, storylines, and features |
ArcheAge Chronicles was originally announced for a 2025 release but has been delayed multiple times. Through mid-2026 the game targeted a Q4 2026 release window, set at the publisher's Q4 2025 results and left unchanged at the Q1 2026 conference call on 30 April 2026. That call said a closed beta was planned for June. What the studio went on to announce and report was a closed focus group test, which ran that month with 165 participants over 2,006 total hours of play and a highest level reached of 16.
The second-quarter 2026 earnings announcement, published in early August 2026, changed the shape of that plan: the Q4 2026 window now refers to a Steam Early Access launch, and no final release on PC or consoles is expected in 2026. Early Access pricing, content scope, and the timing of the full console release have not been announced. The publisher named a fourth-quarter slate to launch in sequence, with ArcheAge Chronicles placed between the mobile title World of Goblins and the strategy RPG Dungeon Arise, and reported a quarter with revenue of roughly 75 billion won and an operating loss of roughly 23 billion won. Coverage dated 3 September 2026 restated the Q4 2026 Early Access target without narrowing it further. No launch date inside the quarter has been given.
Jake Song, the original lead developer and XLGAMES founder, departed the company in early 2025, though the development team has stated they will maintain his core design philosophies.
On 3 September 2026 the studio announced the first test open to players outside a closed group. The details are set out on Network Test. In short: a network test running 12 to 13 September 2026 for Steam users in the United States and Canada, built to measure server performance under heavy load, with access granted by random selection from requests made on the Steam page.
This is the first publicly announced test in a Western territory. Prior testing was limited to internal builds and the June 2026 closed focus group, neither of which was open to applications.
Three surfaces currently disagree, and the arrangement is best read as in transition rather than settled.
Surface | What it says |
|---|---|
Steam store listing | XLGAMES as both developer and publisher |
Official website | Moved from a Kakao Games subdomain to an XLGAMES one during 2026; the footer now carries an XLGAMES copyright line only |
PlayStation Store | XLGAMES as developer, Kakao Games Corp. as publisher |
Microsoft Store | XLGAMES as developer, Kakao Games Corp. as publisher |
Second-quarter earnings materials described the game as self-published by XLGAMES. The console storefronts have not been updated to match. Until they are, both readings have a first-party surface behind them.
A separate transaction adds another layer. On 8 September 2026 XLGAMES filed a business-transfer disclosure covering the sale of the ArcheAge intellectual property and the ArcheAge S development business to Align Studio, a new developer funded by Kakao Games, for roughly 39.2 billion won, with an effective date of 27 October 2026. The ArcheAge Chronicles development project is not named as a transfer target and remains with XLGAMES, but the transferred trademark schedule does include marks covering the ArcheAge Chronicles name. How XLGAMES will hold the rights to develop and operate Chronicles once the underlying intellectual property sits with another company was not disclosed in the filing. See Development Timeline for the sequence and XL Games for the studio-side detail.
