The player takes the role of a nameless champion, a warrior who fights against humans and demons alike across the battlefields of a demon-infested Three Kingdoms. As in the first game, the hero is defined by deeds rather than by a given name.

The champion is bound up with the sequel's phoenix motif, rising amid the fires of war that give Wings of Ember its name. The developers present this figure as the heart of the experience, standing alongside renowned heroes of the age.

Many details about the protagonist remain unconfirmed, including whether character creation returns and how the champion connects to the events of the first game. No other playable or named characters have yet been announced. The fighting style available to the champion is described under Combat.
