Itzeltek

Initial version (2026-04-28)
The Itzeltek are an ancient civilization predating the pirate era of Windrose. Their legacy survives only in carved stone altars, ruined sanctuaries, and a single fragmented legend recorded across three sites in the Cursed Swamps. Unlike the Senkamati, whose remnants now walk the swamps as plague-corrupted enemies, the Itzeltek leave no living survivors. Their story is told entirely through inscriptions and the guardian beast that watches over the priest's burial site.
The Itzeltek are framed in-game as a culture devoted to the God of the Dead. Their religious life centred on a class of priests who tended underworld rites at sacrificial altars deep in what is now plague-flooded swampland. The Jokes of the Gods side quest is the only quest chain that fills in their backstory, and the surviving record is intentionally fragmentary.
The Itzeltek lore thread is distinct from both the Senkamati artifact lore and the Stargazer observatory lore. All three threads share the Cursed Swamps as a setting, but each is delivered through a different set of altars, ruins, and quest pickups, with no narrative crossover confirmed in the launch build.
The Itzeltek story is reconstructed from three pieces of inscribed stone, each found at a separate altar in the swamp interior. Picking up all three is the gating mechanic for the Jokes of the Gods quest:
The Priest's Story, Part One awarded for finding the first inscribed altar.
The Priest's Story, Part Two awarded for finding the second.
The Priest's Story, Part Three awarded for the third and final altar.
The altars themselves are scattered across the flooded interior of the swamps. The completion text the journal writes once the chain finishes reads, "The priest's legend, set down on those altars, is yet another reminder that some things are forbidden for a reason."
The legend follows a single Itzeltek priest of the God of the Dead and his daughter. As recorded across the three altars, the priest pursued a journey into the underworld for reasons the carved text leaves to interpretation. The closing inscription frames his story as a cautionary tale rather than a triumph: forbidden knowledge, broken taboos, and consequences that outlast the priest himself.
The journal line that triggers the first altar describes the find this way: "At the centre of the flooded platform stands an ancient stone altar. Carved into it is the beginning of a tale about the Itzeltek's priest and his daughter."
Reading the third and final inscription triggers the encounter with the Itzeltek Sentinel, a large guardian crocodile that ambushes the player at the priest's burial site. The Sentinel is the Jokes of the Gods chain's final boss step. Defeating it closes the quest and yields its drop table:
Crocodile Tail (0 to 1)
Plague Wood (1)
Tainted Bile (2)
Crocodile Head (1)
The Jokes of the Gods quest itself rewards 5 Tumbaga Ingot and 10 Gold Ingot on completion, separate from the Sentinel's body loot.
Two distinct ancient cultures thread through the Cursed Swamps lore, and the wiki articles for each cover different content:
Itzeltek appear only in inscriptions on three Cursed Swamps altars, and their guardian Itzeltek Sentinel is the Jokes of the Gods boss step. No Itzeltek enemy variants exist; the lineage is treated as fully extinct in-game.
Senkamati appear as the active enemy population of the Cursed Swamps (Plague Berserkers, Plague Crushers, Plague Witches, and other corrupted variants), and their material culture survives as collectible Senkamati Artifacts sold to the Smugglers Buyer.
There is no inscription, NPC dialogue, or quest text in the launch build that explicitly ties the two cultures together. Treat them as parallel pre-pirate civilizations occupying overlapping but separate corners of swamp lore.
Jokes of the Gods the side quest that delivers the Itzeltek priest's legend
Itzeltek Sentinel the guardian crocodile mini-boss
Cursed Swamps the parent biome where every Itzeltek altar is found
Senkamati the parallel pre-pirate culture
Tumbaga Ingot the primary quest reward currency
