Initial version (2026-10-14)
Westlanders is developed by The Breach Studios, a Spanish studio led by CEO Ferran Punti. It was revealed in December 2025 with the Paris publisher Radical Theory as its partner, built an audience through developer blogs and short behind-the-scenes posts in early 2026, and signed with Team17 as publisher in June 2026. This page follows that history in order.
The Breach Studios presented Westlanders as its own take on the survival genre in a Wild West setting. A March 2026 post described it as a small team. Its game director, named in official posts only as Diego, narrated the pre-alpha gameplay walkthrough released in April 2026. The studio's CEO, Ferran Punti, is quoted in both the reveal and the Team17 announcement.
On December 15, 2025, Radical Theory announced its partnership with The Breach Studios "to fuel the development of" Westlanders and released the Reveal Trailer. The game was credited to The Breach Studios as developer and publisher, "powered by Radical Theory", and the plan was a crowdfunding campaign in early 2026, then PC Early Access, then a full release on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement said "the Early Access version is already funded" and framed the campaign as a way to involve players.
Ferran Punti said: "We want to create a game that evolves thanks to those who play it." Luc Heninger, CEO of Radical Theory, said the game "won us over in the first few minutes of gameplay, as the Western setting is still rarely explored in the survival-crafting genre."
Players criticised a pre-alpha wolf attack animation in the reveal trailer. The team acknowledged it was inaccurate and later posted a reworked version; see Combat and Weapons.
From January 2026 the team posted a series of developer blogs and shorter Backstage entries on Steam.

The coffee cup post explained a cheap liquid effect: a flat plane masked by the mug, moved by a simple spring simulation tied to the character's movement, with color, particles and opacity adjustable for different liquids. The third devblog said the team uses Unreal Engine's World Partition system to build a large map that can be expanded with new areas and biomes in later updates. In the January 2026 FAQ, the team said most of the map is made with internal Unreal Engine tools, with an external tool called Gaea used for some map elements.
The fourth devblog said the team drew on Western cinema and literature for mood, aiming to capture "that magnified detail" of the West: hand-cut wood, campfire glow, the dust of a lone cart. Characters were designed as rugged survivalists in mended clothes, weathered by the elements. The composer Sophian Alkurdi is writing the soundtrack and also scored the March 2026 trailer. The former partner's game page lists other survival and open-world games among the team's inspirations; this wiki covers only Westlanders.
In the January 2026 FAQ, the team said it took the decision not to use generative AI for any in-game content, whether art assets, narrative or voice.
On June 11, 2026, Team17 and The Breach Studios announced that Team17 would publish Westlanders, with a new Partnership Announce Trailer. Early Access moved to early 2027 on Steam, and the console versions were planned for the 1.0 launch at a later date. Harley Homewood, General Manager at Team17, said the studio's "unique take on the survival-crafting genre had us hooked from the get go". Ferran Punti welcomed Team17 and thanked Radical Theory "for all of their support as our marketing partner over the last 8 months".
As of October 2026, some storefronts still show the earlier arrangement: the Steam legal line names Radical Theory as co-publisher, and the Xbox Store lists Radical Theory as publisher. See Release Date and Platforms.
