SILENT HILL: Townfall has five endings. Three can be reached during a first playthrough, and two further secret endings become available in New Game Plus. Jon McKellan gave that breakdown at a developer roundtable held after the July press sessions.
Store copy keeps it vaguer: "Endings shaped by the player's actions leave a lasting emotional impression long after the story comes to an end." One earlier interview referred to a single secret ending rather than two, which reads as a simplification of the same structure rather than a different count. Until the game is out, treat five as the working figure.
How Endings Are Decided
There is no branching choice at the end. "They're not based on the A, B choices," McKellan has said. "It's more how you play, the things that you've done, the time you've spent in areas. Our ending system kind of tries to figure out what kind of player you were and what kind of ending feels natural to the way you played."
The inputs that have been named are all behavioural.
Input | What it means |
|---|---|
Exploration | How much of the island the player actually looks at rather than walks past. |
Pacing | How quickly the player moves through the story. |
Time spent in areas | How long the player lingers in a given place. |
Encounter approach | Whether the player fights, evades, hides or runs. See Combat and Stealth. |
Okamoto has described the structure as deliberately not requiring repeat runs to see the main content: all three main endings are reachable from a first playthrough, so players are not forced to replay the game two or three times just to see the primary outcomes.
No Canonical Ending
Konami has been explicit that none of the endings is designated as the true one. "From our perspective, we don't designate any single ending as the true canon ending," Okamoto said. "We take care not to signal that any one ending is more canon than the other." McKellan put it the same way: "I don't think there's a canon of this is what happened."
New Game Plus
New Game Plus exists and holds the two remaining endings. McKellan has said repeat runs feature unlockable weapons and other additions designed to make revisiting the game quicker. Nothing further about New Game Plus has been published, including which weapons unlock or what carries over.
Before Launch
No guide to steering toward a specific ending exists yet, because nothing published explains how the system weighs its inputs. That will only be answerable once players have the full game. The ending count itself is a pre-launch figure taken from developer statements rather than from a shipped build.
