Joker Studio is the developer of Sea of Remnants and a development branch within NetEase Games. The studio is described as focusing on distinct art styles and deep, narrative-driven gameplay, and on building immersive worlds with high emotional resonance. Its announcements for this game carry Hangzhou datelines.
The studio's public reputation rests on an earlier gothic suspense title that found a global audience. That pedigree is the reason the studio is described in first party material as an established team rather than a new one. Nothing from that earlier game carries over into Sea of Remnants: it is a separate title with its own systems, characters and world, and this wiki covers Sea of Remnants only.
Sea of Remnants is described as the studio's latest project, and as one that pushes at the boundaries of its genre through technical work and player-driven storytelling. The design ideas the studio has emphasised across announcements are consistent:
Player choice as the central system, with factions and the city of Orbtopia both reacting to it.
A large cast, initially quoted at more than 300 characters and later at more than 400 companions.
A voyage loop with roguelike elements, so that the same world is re-entered from a different angle each run.
A strong art identity built on wooden puppet characters, comic book presentation and a music-forward tone.
At the reveal, the studio's product lead on the game, Sylar Pan, framed the design goal as placing the world's fate directly in players' hands, noting that with more than 300 characters to interact with as allies, enemies or something in between, every action could trigger surprising and far-reaching consequences.
The game is published by NetEase Games, the online games division of NetEase, Inc. On PlayStation platforms the listed publishing entity is NetEase Interactive Entertainment PTE. LTD.
In March 2026 the studio and publisher announced a collaboration with NVIDIA GeForce to integrate DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution and path tracing into the game at launch. The stated goal is physically accurate lighting, real-time reflections and shadows that react to changing environments, with DLSS Ray Reconstruction available to reduce noise during both naval combat and quiet exploration. The announcement noted that the work followed earlier technical playtests using DLSS 4 with multi frame generation.
From August 2026 the studio committed to a development letter at least once every two months, covering specific changes, current progress and planned work, and said it would take questions from its community channels and address them in later issues. The first issue also acknowledged known problems from the June 2026 demo period, describing extensive work on localisation and voice-over in the months that followed. See Closed Beta Test.
