Ground combat in Sagas of Lumin is the on-foot half of the game. The player can dismount the dragon almost anywhere and fight in close quarters with melee weapons, steampunk firearms and magic. The store page describes melee as built around timing and precision. Most of the basics were playable in the 2025 demo, while new weapons, bosses and reworked animations have only been announced or shown in trailers.
The player can land and continue the fight on foot at any moment. Patch 0.35 of the demo let the dragon land in almost any viable location and be summoned back from almost anywhere on the ground; summoning it while falling triggers a mid-air mount. The CEO has said some levels may require the player to land, but that "in Lumin, the decision will still be up to the player."
Weapon | Status |
|---|---|
Sword | In the 2025 demo |
Axes | Listed on the store page |
Spears | Listed on the store page; Spear is also a roadmap weapon |
Greatsword | Announced on the Roadmap |
Dual Axes | Announced on the roadmap |
Some demo enemies used two-handed swords. Players described light and heavy attacks, and the demo let the player holster a weapon with E on keyboard or Y on controller from patch 0.22.

Blocking and parrying are timing-based, and a dodge roll is available for getting out of trouble. Target lock-on was in the demo. These systems were adjusted through the demo's patches:
Patch | Change |
|---|---|
0.3 | Smoother ground movement and melee animations, target lock fixes, improved block |
0.42 | Better melee AI and animations, improved block, more responsive roll |
0.5 | Improved parry animation |
March 2026 update | Ground combat animations made heavier and more grounded |
The game uses steampunk firearms for ranged attacks. Patch 0.35 improved the crosshairs and added a headshot damage multiplier. Players noted that ammunition was limited in the demo.
The demo's spell was the Aerball, a thrown projectile whose animation was improved in patch 0.3. The official setting page describes a diverse arsenal of elemental magic for fighting on foot. In the official setting text, all magic draws on an energy called Aer.
Healing potions dropped from enemies in camps, and patch 0.3 increased the drop rate.
While the rider fights on foot, the dragon is meant to keep fighting. In May 2025 the developer described this as aerial support activated as a Drair skill that consumes mana. Current studio copy describes the dragon as an independent ally that keeps fighting in the sky, harassing enemies or responding to commands. This was not in the demo; see Dragons and Aerial Combat.
The studio recorded combat animations through motion capture with martial arts instructors in 2024, aiming for movements rooted in real martial arts (see Development History). Ground combat animation was one of the main complaints about the demo, and the studio has kept working on it: the March 2026 demo update made the animations heavier, and the July 2026 trailer showed what the studio called overhauled ground combat. The roadmap promises revamped melee animations, spell casting and enemy behaviors, plus boss battles with cinematic intros and tactical designs. As of October 2026, no boss has been named.
