Overview
Headlight Studio publishes a dedicated requirements page for Rooted alongside the game's other technical documentation. The figures on it are described as targets for the Early Access release rather than measurements taken from the current closed alpha. The studio states plainly that the alpha build is not optimised yet and that a recent, high-end configuration is strongly recommended for smooth play during development, so the published minimum should be read as where the game intends to land, not where it sits today.
Storefront listings carry a shorter and older specification block that leaves the graphics entry unfilled. The studio's own page is the more detailed and more recent of the two, and it is the one used throughout this wiki.
Minimum Specifications
These are the studio's stated minimum targets for the Early Access build.
Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit |
Processor | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 |
Memory | 16 GB RAM |
Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 |
Storage | 20 GB available space on an SSD |
DirectX | Version 12 |
Recommended Specifications
Every field in the recommended column is currently listed as to be announced. The studio has not published a recommended processor, memory figure, graphics card, storage figure, or operating system target, and no second-hand estimate should be treated as one. The recommended tier is expected to firm up as the Early Access build approaches and optimisation work settles.
Additional Requirements
Item | Detail |
|---|---|
Solid-state drive | Strongly recommended for loading times and streaming performance. The 20 GB storage figure is quoted specifically as SSD space. |
Internet connection | Required for multiplayer and for periodic updates. Solo play runs fully offline. |
Controller support | Partial today. Full support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers is planned for Early Access, and the same work feeds the console ports planned after the full PC release. |
Graphics Technologies
Rooted runs on Unreal Engine 5 and leans on the engine's modern rendering stack. The studio has confirmed the following technologies.
Technology | Purpose |
|---|---|
Nanite | High-detail geometry streaming, used across the environment art. |
Lumen | Dynamic global illumination. Global illumination settings are offered as Lumen High and Lumen Ultra. |
DLSS with Frame Generation | Upscaling and frame generation on supported NVIDIA hardware. |
FSR | Upscaling on AMD hardware. FSR 4 integration is listed as completed on the studio's public roadmap. |
The December 2025 hotfix removed the virtual shadow map options from the graphics menu because Lumen depends on them and disabling them caused a large frame-rate drop. Work-position-offset animation on vegetation was disabled in the same patch ahead of a planned switch to geometry-based foliage.
Notes on the Alpha Build
The closed alpha is distributed through Steam Playtest and runs on patch v0.0.2.381, released on August 14, 2026. That patch moved the alpha onto Unreal Engine 5.8, the same engine generation as the production branch the studio documents in its weekly development logs, but the world, systems, and gameplay in it are still the older alpha content. Performance in that build is not representative of the Early Access target, and the studio has said the current alpha no longer reflects where the game is. Players judging whether their hardware is sufficient should compare against the published minimum above rather than against alpha performance.
August 2026 Performance Pass
Patch v0.0.2.381 carried a performance pass that the studio deliberately kept narrow, on the grounds that the deep optimisation work belongs to the production build. It targets four things a player can feel.
Change | Effect |
|---|---|
Shader caches ship with the build | The game precompiles shaders up front instead of hitching the first time a material appears on screen. First sessions in particular should stutter far less. |
Long-distance stand-ins | Three tiers of stand-in geometry now cover the whole island, from mid-range detail to a horizon tier. Before this, past a few hundred metres only the landscape and foliage existed and buildings simply were not drawn. |
Vegetation detail scales with distance | The three most common bushes previously existed only at full detail and accounted for close to three quarters of all rendered geometry. They now step down as they get farther away. |
Smaller wins | Lighter windows at distance, leaner collision data, and more sensible first-launch video defaults. |
The same patch fixed hundreds of materials that could only render as flat magenta in packaged builds, and reintegrated tens of thousands of objects that had been excluded from stand-in generation entirely. None of this changes the published minimum specification above, which remains a target for the Early Access release rather than a measurement of the alpha.
