11Overview2233Pokemon Pokopia (Japanese: Poco a Pokemon) is a life simulation game co-developed by Game Freak and Koei Tecmo's Omega Force, published by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. It released worldwide on March 5, 2026, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Pokopia is the first retail spin-off developed by Game Freak since Pokemon Quest, and the first Pokemon game to feature a life simulation gameplay loop.4455Players control a Ditto that has transformed to look like a human after waking from a long slumber. The game is set in the Kanto region following a cataclysm that forced the human population to evacuate into space. The world has withered and the humans are gone, with only Professor Tangrowth remaining to guide the player. The goal is to rebuild the environment into a thriving Pokemon paradise by collecting materials, crafting structures, befriending Pokemon, and learning their moves.6677Development8899Pokopia was conceived by Shigeru Ohmori, the director of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, who drew inspiration from his early work designing maps for Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire on the Game Boy Advance. While placing grass tiles where Pokemon would appear in those 2D maps, Ohmori cherished the feeling of creating habitats, and that experience eventually led to Pokopia's prototype.101011111212Ohmori initially developed the prototype solo at Game Freak, but recognized the project needed specialized expertise in sandbox game design. The Pokemon Company suggested partnering with Koei Tecmo's Omega Force team, who had recently completed Dragon Quest Builders 2 and Wild Hearts. Takuto Edagawa from Omega Force served as chief director, bringing experience from Dragon Quest Builders 2 that directly informed Pokopia's building mechanics.13131414The team established two core keywords for development: "chill" and "pop," representing cozy gameplay and Pokemon's universal appeal. The game blends mechanics from Animal Crossing, Minecraft, and Rare's Viva Pinata, focusing on habitat creation rather than traditional Pokemon battling.15151616Gameplay171718-Pokopia centers on building, crafting, and befriending Pokemon across five distinct areas. Four moves (Water Gun, Leafage, Cut, Rock Smash) can be powered up by eating specific cooked food.20+Ditto can learn 14 transformation moves from befriended Pokemon.
