11Pre-Release Events2233Overview4455Phantom Blade Zero's pre-release campaign began in May 2023 and spans every major industry event since. Each appearance has emphasised a different facet of the project, including combat mechanics, boss encounters, environmental design, narrative framing, and the studio's production philosophy. The campaign's release-date reveal landed at The Game Awards in December 2025; the launch later shifted to the October 29, 2026 worldwide release, announced at a June 2026 Sony showcase, and a final pre-launch loop of public hands-on demos and the pre-order opening through 2026.667788May 2023: PlayStation Showcase Debut991010Phantom Blade Zero made its global debut on May 24, 2023 at PlayStation Showcase 2023. The roughly three-minute trailer introduced the Kung Fu Punk aesthetic, protagonist Soul, and the core combat loop, blending cinematic sequences with gameplay footage. The Ghost Steps teleport mechanic, weapon switching, and a brief boss encounter were all shown.11111212The reveal drew immediate attention because the visual quality exceeded expectations for a studio that had previously worked on mobile titles, the combat looked fast and distinctive, and the kungfupunk look was unlike anything else in the market. Comparisons to Sekiro and Devil May Cry were frequent, though S-GAME quickly emphasised that PBZ has its own identity rooted in Chinese martial arts.13131414Summer 2024: State of Play15151616An extended gameplay presentation aired during a PlayStation State of Play event. Sustained sequences let viewers see the Sha-Chi System in action, weapon switching during combos, and the blue/red flash signalling for Brutal and Killer Moves.17171818August 2024: Gamescom Playable Demo19192020The first public hands-on opportunity came at Gamescom 2024 in Cologne. The demo featured exploration, standard enemy encounters, and full boss fights including Huangxing and Tie Sha the Frenzy. Reception from press and content creators was overwhelmingly positive, with combat responsiveness, weapon impact, and enemy telegraph readability cited as standout traits.21212222December 2024: The Game Awards23232424A trailer at The Game Awards 2024 leaned into narrative, introducing additional characters, hinting at the scope of the conspiracy, and showing new environments not previously revealed.25252626January 2025: Year of the Snake Trailer27272828A special Year of the Snake trailer added new gameplay footage and confirmed PS5 Pro support, building anticipation heading into the major show season.29293030July 2025: S-PARTY 2025 (Beijing)31313232S-GAME hosted S-PARTY 2025 in Beijing, unveiling fresh gameplay including never-before-seen boss fights, secret-item discoveries, and new weapon showcases. A 22-minute gameplay video offered the most extensive single look at the game to date. The S-PARTY demo showcased the Seven Star Sword Formation level with boss battles against Wan Jun (Coppermaul), Red Wraith, the Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars, and the Chief Disciple's Fallen Hope. The event also confirmed the difficulty modes, with Hellwalker positioned as a New Game+ exclusive.33333434August 2025: Gamescom 202535353636S-GAME's largest pre-release presence: more than 60 demo stations inside a 500-square-meter booth at Hall B-050G. The demo offered roughly one full hour of gameplay per session, a dramatic increase over previous events. Hands-on previews repeatedly described the build as gorgeous and brutal, with sharp visuals and stable performance running on PlayStation 5 Pro hardware.373738383939December 2025: The Game Awards Release Date Trailer40404141On December 12, 2025, S-GAME revealed a September 9, 2026 worldwide release date during The Game Awards via a four-minute trailer that mixed story moments, weapons, and foes with extended combat footage. The 9/9 date was deliberately chosen for the symbolic reversal-of-fate framing. At a June 2026 showcase the studio moved the launch to October 29, 2026, so that symbolism now reflects the original date rather than the shipping one.42424343January 2026: CES 2026 (Las Vegas)44444545Phantom Blade Zero appeared at CES 2026 in Hisense's booth (#17704) at the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 6-9, running a new build on several high-end 320Hz displays. Hands-on impressions described the build as nearly final: optimisation was visibly improved, and the demo ran at a stable 60 fps on a base PlayStation 5. NVIDIA used the same week to confirm day-one DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation and PC-exclusive ray-traced reflections, shadows, and caustics on the PC version.46464747April 2026: Final Stages of Development48484949S-GAME publicly announced that Phantom Blade Zero had entered the final stages of development. CEO and creator Soulframe Liang reiterated that the project does not use generative AI: assets are hand-crafted, character models are based on real actor scans, voice lines are recorded with real talent, and kung fu masters are consulted for authentic movement. The same window included a behind-the-scenes video on the Drunken Sword fighting style, pairing raw motion-capture footage of a stunt performer's drunken-boxing footwork with the in-engine animation it produced.50505151April 30 - May 3, 2026: Gamescom Latam 2026 (Sao Paulo)52525353S-GAME brought a public demo to gamescom Latam 2026 in Sao Paulo, with a Preview Day on April 29. The build featured three bosses and a themed booth decorated with red ropes and an immense dragon statue evoking the final boss. Attendees received hardcover demo manuals containing a control reference, lore summary, and per-boss explanations. Hands-on reactions emphasised the deadly-dance fluidity of the combat and called the build the most polished public-facing build to date. The game went on to win two player-voted awards at the event, Best Exhibitor Game on PC and Best Booth, the only title at gamescom Latam 2026 to take two awards.54545555June 2026: State of Play and Release Delay56565757At a June 2026 Sony showcase, S-GAME presented a roughly 50-second Special Teaser that continued the premise of a masked warrior cradling an infant while escaping a mysterious order through a sea of fire, with several new, not-yet-named foes and locations glimpsed. Alongside the teaser the studio announced that the launch had moved from September 9, 2026 to October 29, 2026, a delay of about 50 days, that pre-orders would open in summer 2026 with a full trailer of unseen in-game footage, and that a dedicated 15 to 20 minute showcase would follow later in the summer to deep-dive the world, combat, exploration, and progression systems.58585959August 2026: Development Complete and Pre-Order Date60606161On August 6, 2026 S-GAME published a short Pre-Order Teaser and stated that development on Phantom Blade Zero was complete. The same announcement dated pre-orders to August 11 at 7:00 PM Pacific, which is August 12 at 10:00 AM Beijing time, across the PlayStation Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, with an 11-minute trailer arriving at the same moment. The studio described that trailer as covering new story content, characters, and combat, plus one element it would only call unexpected.62626363August 11-12, 2026: Pre-Orders Open and the 11-Minute Trailer64646565Pre-orders opened as scheduled at 7:00 PM Pacific on August 11, which is 10:00 AM Beijing time on August 12, simultaneously on the PlayStation Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store. The standard edition is $59.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition is $69.99. Pre-ordering unlocks the Treasure Basin accessory, which raises the Remnant Dust drop rate by 10 percent, and the Legacy outfit; the store listing states both can also be earned through in-game progression rather than being locked to pre-orders.66666767The 11-minute trailer went live at the same moment, covering story, characters and combat. The unexplained element the studio had been teasing was a cast reveal. The man shown cradling an infant in earlier footage is named as Mó Yuan, Leader of the Bastion of Mó, identified by the studio as protagonist Soul's father, and performed through facial and motion capture by Donnie Yen. The same announcement disclosed that Yen has been a creative consultant on the project since 2023, shaping the overall kung fu style and action design, which places him alongside action director Kenji Tanigaki rather than in a one-off cameo role. See Characters and Motion Capture and Choreography.68686969S-GAME published the game's first official PC system requirements on the same day, in four tiers covering minimum, recommended, ray tracing and path tracing. Those are set out under Technical Specifications.70707171August 17, 2026: Dedicated Gameplay Deep Dive State of Play727273-Announced in the same August 11 push, a dedicated Phantom Blade Zero gameplay deep dive State of Play was scheduled for August 17 at 7:00 PM Pacific, which is August 18 at 3:00 AM British time, 10:00 AM Beijing time and 11:00 AM Japan time. The studio billed it at close to twenty minutes of new gameplay covering the game's systems, its combat, and the Phantom World, and framed it as the deeper look the 11-minute trailer had no room for. This resolves the showcase first floated in June, which had gone undated for two months. Its contents are not yet documented on this page.73+Announced in the same August 11 push, a dedicated Phantom Blade Zero gameplay deep dive State of Play was scheduled for August 17 at 7:00 PM Pacific, which is August 18 at 3:00 AM British time, 10:00 AM Beijing time and 11:00 AM Japan time. The studio billed it at close to twenty minutes of new gameplay covering the game's systems, its combat, and the Phantom World, and framed it as the deeper look the 11-minute trailer had no room for. This resolves the showcase first floated in June, which had gone undated for two months.747475+The broadcast ran just under nineteen minutes under the title Enter the Wulin. Donnie Yen opened it with a piece to camera on what kung fu punk means to him, and Soulframe Liang presented the rest, introducing himself as the creator and director and describing the game as a dark wuxia epic of mystery, vendettas and lightning-fast swordplay. Liang said outright that the team had kept its deeper systems under wraps until this point.76+77+The first stretch retold the setup in more detail than any previous showing. Soul is framed for his leader's murder and betrayed by the people he fought beside, and in a final duel against the childhood blood brother he grew up with, a blade goes through his heart. A mysterious healer called the Flesh Sculptor brings him back using what the game calls a tainted heart, and that is where the sixty-six day countdown starts.78+79+The world section framed the Wulin as a martial underworld forged in blood and belief, and put Pang Town at the centre of it as a town crowded with rival factions and hidden schemes. Locations shown included a valley overrun by bandits, an abandoned warehouse hung with puppets where a dark ritual is under way, a steam-powered iron tower built for some kind of experiment, and a wide lake crossed aboard an unusual high-speed vessel. The presentation stated plainly that the game is neither an open world nor a linear adventure: eight hand-painted ink wash maps cover the areas, giving only a rough sense of direction in the more tangled ones, and they join into a single connected world with bells handling fast travel between places already found.80+81+The combat section confirmed more than 30 primary weapons and 25 Phantom Edges, and showed several in use: the Drunken Sword building drunken energy to make Soul harder to pin down, the White Serpent and Crimson Viper twin blades flinging one outward for reach, a soft snake sword that coils past a guard and can cut thrown weapons out of the air, and a cannon that breaks up distant formations or sets off self-destructing enemies early. It also introduced a counter relationship between weapon and armour: heavy shields have to be broken with iron fists or hammers, and trying to solve those fights with a light blade turns them into a slog.82+83+On progression, upgrading a weapon was shown to unlock distinct forms and techniques rather than just raising numbers, and a Reforging Talisman resets a weapon's level and returns every material invested in it so the same resources can go straight into something else. Weapons pair with accessories to form a loadout, defeating particular enemies adds to the arsenal, and summoned allies can be called in to fight alongside Soul. The four difficulty tiers were named here, and side quests were described as able to open entirely new story routes. The broadcast closed with roughly five minutes of an uninterrupted boss encounter.84+7585Demo Content Per Event768677-EventHighlightsPlayStation showcase 2023Cinematic trailer, first gameplay glimpse, Ghost Steps revealState of Play 2024Extended gameplay, Sha-Chi System, weapon switching, world explorationGamescom 2024First playable demo, boss encounters (Huangxing, Tie Sha)TGA 2024Narrative trailer, new characters, cutscene qualityYear of the Snake 2025New weapons and combat footage, PS5 Pro support confirmedS-PARTY 202522-minute gameplay, Seven Star Sword Formation, difficulty tiers confirmedGamescom 2025500m² booth, 60+ stations, 1-hour hands-on, PS5 Pro showcaseTGA 2025Release date trailer (originally September 9, 2026)CES 2026Nearly-final build at Hisense booth, base PS5 60fps, DLSS 4 PC announcement windowDrunken Sword BTS (April 2026)Public motion-capture process video for the Drunken Sword stylegamescom Latam 2026Three-boss public demo with themed booth and demo manuals, won Best Exhibitor Game on PC and Best BoothPre-order trailer (August 2026)11-minute story, character and combat trailer; Mó Yuan revealed with Donnie Yen as performer87+EventHighlightsPlayStation showcase 2023Cinematic trailer, first gameplay glimpse, Ghost Steps revealState of Play 2024Extended gameplay, Sha-Chi System, weapon switching, world explorationGamescom 2024First playable demo, boss encounters (Huangxing, Tie Sha)TGA 2024Narrative trailer, new characters, cutscene qualityYear of the Snake 2025New weapons and combat footage, PS5 Pro support confirmedS-PARTY 202522-minute gameplay, Seven Star Sword Formation, difficulty tiers confirmedGamescom 2025500m² booth, 60+ stations, 1-hour hands-on, PS5 Pro showcaseTGA 2025Release date trailer (originally September 9, 2026)CES 2026Nearly-final build at Hisense booth, base PS5 60fps, DLSS 4 PC announcement windowDrunken Sword BTS (April 2026)Public motion-capture process video for the Drunken Sword stylegamescom Latam 2026Three-boss public demo with themed booth and demo manuals, won Best Exhibitor Game on PC and Best BoothPre-order trailer (August 2026)11-minute story, character and combat trailer; Mó Yuan revealed with Donnie Yen as performerGameplay deep dive State of Play (August 2026)Nineteen-minute systems showcase: eight-area world and bell fast travel, 30-plus weapons and 25 Phantom Edges, weapon upgrading and reforging, summons, accessories, the four difficulty tiers, and a five-minute boss encounter7888Key Details79898090ActionKey/ButtonRevealMay 24, 2023, PlayStation Showcase 2023First playableAugust 2024, GamescomMost extensive footageJuly 2025, S-PARTY (22-minute walkthrough)Largest demoAugust 2025, Gamescom (60+ stations, 1 hour per session)Release date lockedDecember 12, 2025, TGA 2025Final-stretch hands-onJanuary 2026 (CES) and April-May 2026 (gamescom Latam)Release dateOctober 29, 2026 (revised from September 9, 2026)Development completeAugust 6, 2026Pre-orders openedAugust 11, 2026 (7:00 PM Pacific; August 12, 10:00 AM Beijing time)Pricing$59.99 standard; $69.99 Digital Deluxe EditionGame length~20-30h main story; ~40-60h with side content; ~30% of content per first runPlatformsPS5 (12-month console exclusivity), PC (Steam + Epic)8191Attendance and Awards82928393S-GAME has published figures for the two hands-on programmes it has run. The 2024 World Tour Demo, which followed the Summer Game Fest gameplay trailer, put the game in front of more than 12,000 players across its expo stops.84948595The 2025 programme was three events rather than one. Between 26 July and 26 August 2025 the studio ran large-scale offline hands-on sessions at Shougang Park in Beijing, Fuxing Island in Shanghai, and Cologne, drawing more than 5,000 players in total. The Beijing event was the first of the three, and the venue was dressed with thousands of suspended threads to build the kung fu punk staging the studio has since kept referring back to.86968797At gamescom Latam 2026 in Sao Paulo the game took two audience-voted awards, Best PC Game and Best Booth, the only title at the show to win both. The build on the floor was the Seven-Star Sword Formation demo first shown at the Beijing event, presented alongside an art exhibition. Brazil is the studio's second-largest source of overseas wishlists, and queue waits at the booth ran past five hours.
