Little Sparrow

Initial version (2026-04-28)
Little Sparrow is the maid cafe location in Hethereau where players access the in-game Mahjong mini-game. The cafe was added to the launch build to host the newly implemented Little Sparrow Mahjong system, which lets players sit down at virtual tables and play full tile-based riichi mahjong against other human players, AI bots, or any combination of the two.
The name "Little Sparrow" is a translation of the Chinese term 小雀 (xiǎo què), often used as a colloquial label for mahjong tables and gatherings. The maid cafe theme adds a casual, social atmosphere to what is otherwise a fairly involved tile game, making the location one of the more relaxing destinations in Hethereau for players who want a break from the supernatural anomaly hunting that drives the main story.

Little Sparrow hosts the full ruleset of Mahjong with the standard 4-player table format. Players sit at one of four positions (East, South, West, North), receive 13 tiles, and play through hands until one player declares a winning combination or the wall runs out. Successful hands earn Fons, the city currency, with higher-scoring hands paying more.
The mini-game supports both online matchmaking against other players and offline play against AI opponents. The AI fills any open seats when matchmaking cannot find four humans within a reasonable window, which means players can always start a game without waiting for a full table.
AI opponents were added in the launch build specifically to address one of the most common complaints about online tile-game mini-games: long matchmaking queues. The Little Sparrow AI fills empty seats automatically once the matchmaking window expires, so a player who queues for a four-player match never sits at an empty table.
Three AI difficulty tiers are available, and the AI can be set to fill all four seats if a player wants to practice without other humans. AI behavior is calibrated for fair play; bots use standard tile-reading heuristics and do not see the player's closed hand. The AI is also useful for testing rule edge cases or working on advanced patterns without the social pressure of online play.
Difficulty | Behavior | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Easy | Predictable plays, often discards openly | New players learning the rules |
Standard | Balanced offense and defense; standard yaku targeting | Most casual matches; default option |
Hard | Aggressive yaku setup, defensive folding, advanced reads | Experienced players who want a challenge |
Online play matches with other players on the same regional server. Like all co-op content in the game, mahjong is cross-platform: PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android players all match with each other within their region. Players who fill rooms with their own friends can also start private games with bot fillers.
Cross-region matchmaking is not supported. A player on the America server cannot match against a player on the Asia server, even though the game is the same. This is consistent with how every other multiplayer feature in the game handles regional servers.
Players can unlock additional table layouts, tile skins, dealer effects, and cafe atmosphere variations as they accumulate Fons wins at Little Sparrow. Unlocked table themes range from the standard maid cafe interior to seasonal variations and special character-themed sets.
Tile skins: cosmetic alternatives for the standard tile set, including character-themed and seasonal variants.
Table layouts: rotating cosmetic backgrounds and table cloths.
Dealer effects: cosmetic upgrades to the tile-discarding and hand-revealing animations.
Cafe outfits: visible to other players when sitting at a public table; tied to the wider city outfit customization.
Start with AI on Easy or Standard if you are new to mahjong. The AI does not punish slow play and helps you internalise yaku without the pressure of human opponents.
Run a private four-bot game to practice. With all three opponents AI-controlled, you can repeat hands quickly and try different yaku targets.
Save high-scoring hands for Fons runs. Higher-yaku hands pay more, and the long-form payouts are useful for funding the City Tycoon economy.
Use the social aspect. Little Sparrow is one of the few in-game spaces designed purely for casual social interaction, with no anomaly investigation pressure.
Cosmetic unlocks are tied to wins, not just attendance. Spend a few sessions actually playing to acquire the seasonal table variants.
