Added the third trailer narration line with its date and kept all three quoted separately, added cross-links to the setting, story and Spartan Order pages, and dated the page's open questions
The Stranger is the protagonist of Metro 2039. He is a new character, introduced to the series for this game; he is not a continuation or reimagining of Artyom, the protagonist of earlier Metro entries. The Stranger is the first fully voiced protagonist in the Metro franchise, a deliberate design choice by 4A Games to bring greater narrative immediacy to the character.
Very little has been confirmed about The Stranger's personal history. What the developers have described is that he is a recluse, a man who has deliberately cut himself off from the world of the Metro. He is tormented by violent nightmares, the nature of which has not been disclosed. At some point he came to regard the Metro as a place he could never return to, and he made a vow to that effect. His name has not been revealed. Some of the past has: the publisher says the second gameplay trailer, shown in August 2026, "uncovers more of the dark past and mysterious identity of The Stranger", though what it uncovers has not been set out in words anywhere.
The central premise of Metro 2039 is that The Stranger is forced, under circumstances not yet revealed, to make a harrowing journey back into the Moscow Metro. This return is against everything he has resolved to do, and it forms the emotional and narrative core of the game. The journey brings him into conflict with the Novoreich, the authoritarian regime that now controls the Metro, and with its leader, Hunter. That journey now has a named waypoint. At Sevastopolskaya, a station deep in the Metro, he "will uncover vital information about the pursuit of his target" and makes his preparations for what follows. The publisher has not said what or who the target is.
What has been published about that station, and about the settlements the game shows, is set out on Setting and World.
As the playable character, The Stranger is shown in reveal footage navigating confined Metro tunnels, engaging in tactical first-person combat, and employing stealth to slip past enemies. The reveal depicted him as a survivalist, making use of hand-crafted weapons and managing scarce resources. His fully voiced presence means he reacts to and comments on the world around him, a departure from the more silent protagonists of earlier games in the series.
The diegetic interface tradition of the Metro series carries over for The Stranger; in the reveal footage, he is shown checking a wristwatch rather than reading from an on-screen heads-up display. He also relies on a gas mask with replaceable filters when moving through hazardous areas.
A gameplay trailer released in June 2026 expanded this picture. The Stranger is shown not only in the tunnels but exploring the ruins of Moscow above ground, and his arsenal now includes newly revealed gear such as a stealth weapon called the Shatun and a breaching charge for forcing a path through barriers. A second gameplay trailer followed in August 2026. The publisher's description of it has him employing "a mixture of stealth and all-out combat to infiltrate a Novoreich-occupied Moscow", while the studio's own framing was narrower, offering "a further glimpse into the protagonist, The Stranger".
The June 2026 gameplay trailer is narrated by The Stranger, and it is the clearest indication so far of what drives him. 4A Games describes him as consumed with anger and hatred, his inner monologue chastising the Fuhrer for his lies and hypocrisy. Lines from that narration were published one at a time on the game's official channels through June and July 2026, each of them addressed to Hunter rather than spoken by him: "You promised a brighter future for our people..." on 9 June, "You swore to crush the enemy..." a week after it on 16 June, and "You promised to guide the Metro back into the light" on 8 July. They were posted weeks apart as separate lines rather than as one continuous piece of narration, and nothing published establishes their order in the game. He appears to hold Hunter personally responsible for how the Metro fell, though the studio has not said what connects the two men.
The studio has also teased that the Dark Ones are returning, and that they are hinted at within The Stranger's nightmares. 4A Games deliberately left it there, saying only that the answer is for another day. What they are in 2039, and what they have to do with him, has not been explained. The tease and the way the regime itself talks about them are covered on Story and Themes.
In August 2026 the publisher set out a physical detail of the Stranger's gear that had not been described before. He wears a Spartan helmet, a piece of equipment the publisher calls "an essential survival tool for an irradiated world" and describes by "its hinged visor and trademark integrated gas mask elements". It is an established part of the wider Metro world rather than something new to this game.
His own is marked by what he has been through. In the publisher's words: "Through its damage detail, scratches and personal customisations, the Stranger's helmet tells its own story of a post-apocalyptic life marked by untold horrors, trauma, and life-or-death decisions." A replica of it is the one disclosed item in the announced Collector's Edition.
The helmet does not establish that the Stranger is a Spartan, and the narration points the other way. The line the second gameplay trailer is built around has him setting himself apart from them: "The Spartans were wolves in helmets..." and then, "...but I am something worse." Nothing published so far says he belongs, or ever belonged, to the Spartan Order. What is confirmed is the helmet he wears and the distance the narration puts between him and the people it is associated with. Coverage that calls him a Spartan is going beyond what has been stated.
The gaps noted on this page are absences from the published record as of 12 September 2026 rather than statements about the finished game.
