66 Insomniac's own framing of the opening is that Logan rejoins his former team for a critical mission to infiltrate Trask's outpost and save Nathaniel Essex, and that this sets the stage for the story. It is the first thing the game asks the player to do, and it is a rescue rather than a confrontation: Essex is a captive at that point, not an opponent.

88 The mission doubles as the campaign's introduction to its two rank-and-file factions at once. Logan fights through Trask's Reavers and meets The Hand in the same sequence, which is earlier than the Japanese material had suggested for the latter. He also has a run-in with Omega Red on the way. 1515 Telambang is the first of the campaign's purpose-built areas. The game moves on from it to Canada and Vancouver, to Japan, and to Madripoor. It is not an open world and Telambang is not a hub: the structure is a run of discrete areas visited in order. See Locations and Story and Setting.
