She is protecting a group of captured mutant teenagers on her own, and she has emerged as their leader by default rather than by appointment. That is a large part of why she and Logan end up fighting the same enemy: Bolivar Trask is abducting mutants, and the people she is protecting are exactly who he is hunting. See Story and Setting.
