Mythological Background
In Chinese mythology, Hou Yi is a divine archer who saved humanity by shooting down nine of the ten suns that were scorching the earth. The legend tells that ten sun-birds (the children of the Jade Emperor) rose into the sky simultaneously, threatening to burn the world. Hou Yi shot down nine with his bow, leaving one to provide light and warmth.
In Primaera's reimagined mythology, Hou Yi appears as a ranged Flow style whose attacks carry the power of the sun. His abilities reference his legendary feat, with solar imagery woven into his combat effects.
Abilities
Chastising Shot (Passive)
Each basic attack grants Hou Yi one stack of enhancement and increases his attack speed by 4% per stack. At three stacks, Hou Yi enters the Chastising Shot state, where his basic attacks fire three arrows simultaneously dealing a total of 130% of normal damage. This passive rewards consistent attacking and creates a rhythm of building stacks into empowered volleys.
Arrow Volley
An enhanced attack that deals increased damage. When Chastising Shot is active (3 stacks), Arrow Volley fires three arrows with bonus damage per arrow. This ability converts the passive's stacking mechanic into burst damage, making it the primary damage tool in Hou Yi's rotation.
Afterglow (Sun Tower)
Hou Yi places a Sun Tower at a target location that deals area-of-effect damage and provides vision of the area. After a brief delay, the tower explodes, dealing additional damage and slowing enemies by 30% for two seconds. This ability provides area control, vision for the team, and a slow debuff that helps Hou Yi maintain distance from melee enemies.
Burning Sun Arrow (Ultimate)
Hou Yi fires a blazing arrow in a specified direction. If it hits an enemy, the arrow stuns them and causes an explosion dealing area damage. The stun duration scales with the arrow's flight distance, ranging from 0.5 seconds at point-blank to 3.5 seconds at maximum range. This creates a skill-expressive ultimate where long-range snipes are rewarded with massive stun durations.
Playstyle Guide
Tip | Details |
|---|---|
Maintain stacks | Keep attacking to maintain Chastising Shot's 3-stack state. Stopping attacks resets your stacks. |
Position carefully | As a ranged hero, Hou Yi is vulnerable to melee attackers. Use Afterglow's slow and Burning Sun Arrow's stun to create distance. |
Long-range ultimates | Burning Sun Arrow stuns longer at max range. Look for opportunities to snipe enemies from across the arena for 3.5-second stuns. |
Sun Tower for vision | Place Afterglow in bushes or around corners to spot enemies before they can ambush you. |
Pair with frontline | Hou Yi functions best with a tank or warrior like Lu Bu absorbing pressure while he fires from the back line. |
Boss Fight Application
Hou Yi excels in boss encounters where maintaining sustained ranged damage is valuable. His stack-based passive rewards consistent attack uptime, and his Sun Tower provides persistent area damage and slow debuffs on bosses. The Burning Sun Arrow ultimate can be saved for posture break windows to maximize burst damage during vulnerability phases.
Team Synergy
Lu Bu (Warrior): Draws enemy aggro and provides knockup setups for Hou Yi to capitalize on.
Cai Wenji (Support): Sustained healing keeps Hou Yi in the fight during extended encounters.
Da Qiao (Support): Portal recall provides an emergency escape if melee enemies breach the back line.
Zhao Yun (Assassin): Together they provide both ranged and melee burst damage during posture break windows.
