The Revenants are the main enemies of Frostrail. FakeFish's reveal post describes a multitude of enemies known as Revenants who challenge the survivors along the way, and explains that they are connected to, and have been twisted by, the same entity responsible for the persistent cold. Despite their gruesome shapes and the significant threat they pose, the developers call them "the cannon fodder enemy" and warn that "there are worse things to come, later".
The store page says the land was twisted by the Emperor's pact with the Void and that its ruins are haunted by relentless revenants and eldritch horrors. The reveal post ties the Revenants to the same entity behind the persistent cold. FakeFish has not explained what that entity is. See World and Lore for the wider setting.
Revenants haunt the ruins of the fallen empire. The October 2026 Demo announcement says they haunt the abandoned towns where players gather resources, and that they will hunt players down. They do not appear right away: the official demo FAQ explains that the early stages of the game focus on core gameplay, so players will not meet any Revenants during the tutorial. In the FAQ's words, "Revenants have a special place in Frostrail and will eventually find their way to you."
Fighting Revenants was listed as a feature of two test builds:
Build | Revenant content |
|---|---|
April 2026 closed playtest | Fight Revenants and raid early game dungeons |
October 2026 Demo | Fight Revenants |
Frostrail is a first-person shooter in which ammo is a luxury. The reveal post presents avoiding unnecessary fights as a real alternative to fighting. The store page says players can face the revenants alone or band together to survive relentless combat, with up to four players in co-op. See Combat and Multiplayer and Co-op.
The Train is part of the defense. The store page talks about reinforcing its walls, crafting weapon stations, and upgrading the engine to outpace the horrors that hunt the crew.
The Revenants have changed noticeably across development:
Date | Change |
|---|---|
August 2025 | The team adjusted animations, sounds and enemy mechanics while honing the feel of combat, and wrote that the Revenants were really angry now |
December 2025 | After the limited November playtest, enemy AI in the 3D environment was named as an area that still needed work |
May 2026 | New enemy variations were added |
In August 2025 FakeFish also promised to write more about these enemies soon. As of October 2026, no post dedicated to the Revenants has appeared on the game's Steam news feed.
The Revenants are not the only threat. The store page mentions eldritch horrors alongside them, and the Steam content descriptor names wolves and humanoids as examples of the enemy creatures players kill. FakeFish has not said which of these, if any, count as Revenants. The reveal post's warning that worse things come later has not yet been followed by any named enemy.
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not published names or descriptions of individual Revenant types, their weaknesses or statistics, what the new enemy variations look like, or any boss encounters.
