Frostrail is set in the frozen ruins of a fallen empire. According to the store page, the land that was once a mighty empire now lies barren, consumed by an unrelenting cold, and its ruins are haunted by relentless Revenants and eldritch horrors. FakeFish calls the game a survival horror adventure set in a post-apocalyptic world of ice and eldritch enemies, and its reveal post also called it a dieselpunk FPS survival crafting game. As of October 2026, FakeFish has shared few story details beyond the store text and that reveal post.

The fallen empire
The reveal post titled its lore section the cold ashes of a fallen empire. It asks players to imagine a place on Earth where nearly all life has been bled dry, frozen over and disfigured by a malevolent force at the behest of a warmongering religious zealot. Players explore the ruins of this former empire, which the store page says are entombed in ice and time.
The Emperor and the Void
The store page connects the land's state to the Emperor: twisted by the Emperor's pact with the Void, its ruins are haunted by relentless revenants and eldritch horrors. FakeFish has not named the Emperor or explained what the Void is beyond this line. The reveal post describes the Revenants as connected to, and twisted by, the same entity responsible for the persistent cold.
The Penitent Gardeners
The store page introduces the Penitent Gardeners. Aboard an armored, steam-powered train, they purge the land of the cursed, granting mercy to the lost and striking down the wicked, while seeking salvation in the heart of the frozen desolation. As of October 2026, FakeFish has not explained the Gardeners' history, beliefs or leadership in more detail.
The survivors
In the reveal post, the player is one of very few survivors in a disaster-torn world, facing unfavorable odds with very little in the way of arms or resources. The one thing in their favor is a train. Traveling across the frozen wastes, they pursue salvation somewhere beyond the northern horizon. The May 2026 development update refers to this journey as a pilgrimage.
The train and the Eden Engine
The armored, steam-powered train is the survivors' lifeline and moving base, and their only reliable source of heat. Its life-sustaining power source is called the Eden Engine. See The Train for how it works in play.
Creatures of the cold
The reveal post explains that the Revenants are the cannon fodder enemy, despite their gruesome shapes and the significant threat they pose, and warns that there are worse things to come later. The store page also mentions eldritch horrors and says that something else stirs in the silence of the snow. The Steam content descriptor names wolves and humanoids as examples of the enemy creatures players fight. See Combat.
Landscape
The surface is a frozen wasteland of ruins, abandoned settlements and towns, and wreckage lost to the frost. Beneath it lie dangerous depths, including derelict bunkers and ruined strongholds. The only named biome so far is the tundra, which the May 2026 update expanded with new landscapes and nature assets. Blizzards blind, slow and suffocate those caught in them. See Exploration and Dungeons and Survival.
Visual style
The game's look changed after the April 2025 reveal trailer. In December 2025, FakeFish introduced a revised, lower-fidelity visual style that its relatively small team can produce reliably and in the quantities the game needs, while keeping the overall style consistent and the game more performant. By August 2025, artists had also begun working more directly on key locations, with more hand-placed structures and clutter, which the February 2026 trailer post tied to stronger visual storytelling. The Development History page covers these changes.
Story development
The December 2025 update said the team had spent the year expanding its lore and documentation and laying foundations for campaign progression. It also said the in-game tutorial would be fleshed out as the onset of the game's story, and the May 2026 update added a brand-new tutorial level.
Not yet confirmed
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not revealed the name of the Emperor, the nature of the Void, the identity of the warmongering religious zealot named in the reveal post, the player character's name or background, how the player relates to the Penitent Gardeners, or what lies beyond the northern horizon.
