Frostrail can be played alone or in online co-op with up to four players. FakeFish has said the game was developed with crews of one to four players in mind, and the October 2026 Demo announcement invited players to bring their best teammates and brave the cold together. The Steam store lists Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op and Online Co-op among the game's features, and Co-op and PvE among its tags.
Crew size
Up to four players can share a session. In its April 2025 FAQ, FakeFish said crew size is something it will keep evaluating during development and Early Access to find a good balance between the size of the crew and the challenge. As of October 2026, no change to the four-player limit has been announced.
Creating and joining sessions
The official demo FAQ explains the basics:
Task | How to do it |
|---|---|
Host a game | Choose Create on the main menu |
Join a game | Choose Join on the main menu, or open Find Server |
Join a friend | Open Find Server, look for the name of the friend's session, and join it |
Join a game in progress | Sessions that have already started can be joined through Find Server |
Resume a previous session | The host can resume it; play restarts at the beginning of the level where the group stopped |
Saving in co-op
Saves are automatic and happen at each level transition, when the train passes through a tunnel. When a host resumes a multiplayer session, the game starts from the beginning of the level the group stopped at. See Saving and Progression for the full rules.
Co-op in the tutorial
The demo FAQ notes that when playing with friends, everyone needs to complete the tasks they are given for the group to keep progressing through the tutorial. A player who gets stuck can use the Suicide button to respawn at a safe place.
Playing together
The store page describes co-op as facing the Revenants alone or banding together to survive relentless combat. The February 2026 gameplay trailer announcement listed exploring, scavenging, crafting and fighting, alone or in co-op, alongside operating and upgrading The Train. The Early Access notes single out co-op when describing new situations planned for the full version: FakeFish wants to refine how players are positioned in unique and precarious scenarios to create memorable moments.
Friend invites during test phases
The April 2026 closed playtest and the closed beta let players bring friends in through Steam:
Test phase | Invite rules |
|---|---|
April 2026 closed playtest | Each player granted access could invite one Steam friend through Steam's Friend Invite feature, and that friend could invite another, and so on |
August to September 2026 closed beta | Each player could invite up to 3 friends, and each of those friends could invite up to 3 more; invites were found on the Steam game page |
The demo FAQ also confirms that playtesters can invite their Steam friends. More on these tests is on Playtests and Closed Beta.
Not yet confirmed
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not announced a player-versus-player mode, support for more than four players, a separate dedicated server package, or how loot and storage are divided between players in a shared session.
