This page collects answers to the questions players ask most often about Frostrail. The answers come from the developers' own FAQ post of April 24, 2025, the Early Access section of the Steam store page, and the official demo FAQ published alongside the October 2026 Demo. Where an answer has changed since 2025, the newer information is given.
A first-person survival crafting game set in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world. Players explore, scavenge, craft and fight, and they operate and upgrade an armored, steam-powered train that serves as their moving base and only reliable source of heat. See The Train and Survival.
FakeFish develops the game and Shiro Unlimited publishes it. The Frostrail team includes many FakeFish developers who worked on the studio's previous game, along with new people hired specifically for Frostrail.
Unreal Engine 5.
The Steam store page lists a planned Early Access release in Q4 2026. As of October 2026, no exact date has been announced. See Release Date and Platforms.
The developers expect about a year, with the exact length depending on player feedback and on how their plans for the game progress.
As of October 2026, the price has not been announced. In April 2025 the developers said it was too early to give numbers and that the price would only be finalized at release. The store's Early Access section says they plan to gradually increase the price upon the 1.0 release, depending on the content and features added.
Windows PC through Steam. The store lists Windows as the only platform as of October 2026.
Not at first. The game is releasing in Early Access on PC first, and the developers said they will evaluate possible console ports for 1.0 and beyond. As of October 2026, no console version has been announced.
In April 2025 the developers called Linux support a tentative yes, noting that one of their developers works primarily on Linux. Mac and Linux support is kept in mind during development, but both can only be confirmed on release. The PC version's stability for Early Access is the top priority.
Controller support is in the development plans, but the developers said it will probably not be available right at the start of Early Access.
The minimum listing asks for Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage. The full minimum and recommended specs are on System Requirements.
One to four. The developers built the game with crews of one to four players in mind and said they would keep evaluating crew size against challenge during development and Early Access.
The main menu has options to create or join a session. To join a friend, open Find Server, look for the name of their session and join it. Sessions that have already started can be joined the same way. See Multiplayer and Co-op.
Saving is automatic. The game saves at each level transition, when the train passes through a tunnel. There is currently no other way to save. A host can resume a previous multiplayer session, which restarts at the beginning of the level where the group stopped. See Saving and Progression.
Your inventory stays on your body, and you can return to it to recover the items you had. Items that were dropped or left behind may be permanently lost, so the official advice is to keep your most valuable gear on you.
The throttle is on the right side of the control panel. The brakes also need to be released.
Yes. Items placed in a wagon can be moved anywhere within it. Walls that contain a door can also be repaired: hover over the door and pick the action with the mouse scroll wheel.
More advanced weapons, gear and tools become available to craft as you progress through the game. See Crafting and Scavenging and Combat.
The early stages focus on core gameplay. The demo FAQ says Revenants have a special place in the game and will find their way to players later.
Use the "Suicide" button to respawn at a safe place. In co-op, everyone needs to complete the tasks they are given for the group to progress. The first blockade can only be removed after specific actions are completed, so wait until the quest tells you to interact with it.
Yes. A free demo runs from October 19 to October 26, 2026 during Steam Next Fest, and it is installed from the Frostrail Steam page. Earlier tests are covered on Playtests and Closed Beta.
Only in a limited way. The developers said that, partly because of engine constraints, full moddability of the kind FakeFish offered in its previous game is not possible with Frostrail, but they would explore other forms of customization and smaller-scale modding support during development and Early Access.
No. Localization is handled entirely by the publisher, so as of April 2025 the developers were not looking to source translations elsewhere. The publisher also handles marketing through its own partners.
On the official Discord server and the Steam forums. The developers also run surveys, including one after the demo, and plan to discuss upcoming changes with the community.
