Updated for the end of Steam Next Fest and added the October 23 player and wishlist milestones
The Frostrail Demo is a free playable slice of Frostrail released on Steam on October 19, 2026 for Steam Next Fest, which ran from October 19 to October 26, 2026. The demo can be played solo or in co-op with up to four players, and it is open to everyone on Steam, while the earlier tests were limited to players who were granted access or invited by a friend. FakeFish and Shiro Unlimited are using it to gather feedback and find remaining issues ahead of the Early Access launch planned for Q4 2026.
The demo was announced on October 7, 2026 and went live on October 19. It has its own Steam entry, separate from the main game, and is installed through the Frostrail store page. It is free. As of October 2026, the demo's entry lists Windows as its only platform, and its system requirement fields still read TBA; the main game's listed requirements are on System Requirements.
The studio's posts gave October 26, 2026 as the last day to play the demo during the festival. As of October 26, 2026, after Steam Next Fest had ended, the Frostrail store page still offered the demo for download. The studio has not said how long it will remain available.
The demo's Steam entry lists single-player, multi-player, co-op and online co-op. For hosting and joining sessions, see Multiplayer and Co-op.
On October 23, 2026, with the festival still running, the studio posted these figures for the demo:
Milestone | Reported figure |
|---|---|
Unique players | 110,000 |
Peak concurrent players | Almost 9,000 |
New wishlists | Over 45,000 |
Total wishlists | 570,000 |
Steam Next Fest standing | Reached the top 5 demos |
The post thanked players for their feedback, which it said was helping the team understand what players enjoy and what needs improving. It also shared a set of community screenshots.
An official Next Fest demo content infographic sums up what the demo includes. It also sits at the top of the main game's store page.

Fight Revenants |
The release post describes the loop in plain terms. The train is the player's home, to be upgraded, maintained and kept moving. Along the way, players explore abandoned towns to gather resources and craft equipment, food and weapons. Revenants haunt those towns and will hunt players down.
The demo opens with a tutorial that focuses on core gameplay, so Revenants do not show up right away. The demo FAQ says they will find their way to players later. Early on, the first blockade can only be removed after specific actions are completed, so players should wait until the quest instructs them to interact with it.
The demo follows the closed beta of August 31 to September 7, 2026, which more than 70,000 players joined. The developers said combat was one of their main areas of focus after reading that feedback. The release post lists these additions:
Area | Change |
|---|---|
Improved melee hit feedback | |
Combat | Enhanced blood splatter effects |
Combat | Adjusted stamina consumption for better balance |
Animations | Added idle animations when holding melee weapons |
Crafting | Added sounds during dismantling and when the process is complete |
Train | Improved the access ramp to make boarding easier |
Train | Better visibility through the windows to see what is ahead |
The post adds that there are many more improvements beyond those listed.
An official demo FAQ was published with the release post. Its answers, in short:

The official demo content infographic lists seven languages: English, French, German, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Spanish and Simplified Chinese. As of October 2026, the demo's own Steam entry lists only English under supported languages, while the main game's entry lists all seven.
Players who finish the demo are asked to fill out a survey about what they enjoyed, what could be improved and what they would like to see next. The developers also invite players to the official Discord server. According to the release post, the demo is meant to help the team identify remaining issues, fine-tune the experience and polish the final details before Early Access.
