Crafting and Scavenging

Crafting and scavenging make up much of the moment-to-moment loop in Frostrail. Players leave the train to search ruins, abandoned settlements and wreckage for supplies, then turn what they find into clothing, food, weapons and other equipment. The store summary lists the loop as explore, scavenge, craft and fight, and the limited November 2025 playtest confirmed to the developers that the core concept of train driving, exploration and crafting worked for testers.

Very little of the old world remains, and players have to dig through what is left. The store page describes several kinds of places to search:
Where to search | What the store page says |
|---|---|
The wasteland | Explore it for vital supplies |
Abandoned settlements | Scavenge their remnants |
Wreckage | Break into wreckage lost to the frost |
Treacherous depths | Greater rewards come at a deadly cost |
Derelict bunkers and ruined strongholds | Darkness conceals both salvage and death |
The October 2026 demo announcement adds that abandoned towns hold resources to gather and are haunted by Revenants. The deeper locations are covered on Exploration and Dungeons.
Scavenging is always a gamble against the cold. Every step away from the train is risky, and the store frames each trip as a choice between risking death for precious supplies and staying safe without them. See Survival for how heat works.
Found items can be broken down. The April 2026 playtest content sheet listed scavenging, recycling and crafting early game equipment as one of its features, and the October 2026 demo added sounds during dismantling and when the process is complete.
Sources from FakeFish confirm the following categories of craftable items:
Clothes, food and weapons, named in the reveal post
Weapons and equipment, named on the store page
Weapon stations for the train
Advanced weapons, gear and tools, which become available as the player progresses
The May 2026 update added multiple new clothing sets. As of October 2026, FakeFish has not published recipe lists, resource names or the number of craftable items.
The store page lists crafting stations and storage among the things players add to The Train as they expand it with new carriages. The May 2026 development update also reworked the item repair system with dedicated repair workstations, intended to make maintaining gear feel more immersive and intuitive.
Better equipment is tied to progress through the game. The official demo FAQ answers a question about better ranged weapons by saying that advanced weapons, gear and tools will become available to craft as players progress through the game. The store's Early Access notes list varied loot and crafting new items and weapons among the progression planned for the full release, so more crafting content is expected during Early Access.
The store tags include Inventory Management and Resource Management. Items placed in the train can be moved anywhere within their wagon, according to the demo FAQ. A player who dies keeps their inventory on their body and can return for it, but items that are dropped or left behind may be permanently lost. See Saving and Progression.
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not announced specific crafting recipes, material names, item rarity tiers, inventory size limits, or how storage works when several players share a session.
