Frostrail is a first-person shooter, but not one built around plentiful ammunition. FakeFish's reveal post described it as a game where ammo is a luxury and fights are nothing to be taken lightly. Players can fight, or try to avoid unnecessary fights, while exploring a frozen world haunted by Revenants and other eldritch horrors. Combat works alongside melee weapons, crafted gear and the defenses of the train.

Because ammunition is scarce, combat is a resource decision as much as a reflex test. The reveal post lists trying to avoid unnecessary fights as part of the core loop next to fighting itself, and the store page frames many choices as a trade between risk and supplies.
Frostrail includes both ranged and melee weapons. The developers showed new weapon models in their August 2025 summer update, and by December 2025 the team said it was homing in on the feel of close-range combat. The Steam store tags include FPS, First-Person and Action.
Better weapons come from crafting rather than from the start. The official demo FAQ says advanced weapons, gear and tools become available to craft as players progress through the game. See Crafting and Scavenging for more on how equipment is made. As of October 2026, FakeFish has not published a list of named weapons or their statistics.
Frostrail has a stamina system, and the October 2026 demo adjusted stamina consumption for better balance as part of its combat changes. The developers have not published which actions cost stamina or how much.
Combat was one of the main areas of focus after the closed beta. The demo announcement said the team had read player feedback and made a range of improvements to make combat more enjoyable and strengthen its role as a core part of the game. The listed changes were:
Area | Change |
|---|---|
Combat | Improved melee hit feedback |
Combat | Enhanced blood splatter effects |
Combat | Adjusted stamina consumption for better balance |
Animations | Added idle animations when holding melee weapons |
The announcement said there were many more improvements beyond those listed. See Demo for the rest of the demo's content.
The main enemies are the Revenants, whom the reveal post called the cannon fodder enemy and warned that there are worse things to come later. The Steam content descriptor says the game revolves around fighting and killing enemy creatures, with wolves and humanoids given as examples, and mentions blood splatters.
Enemy behavior has been a recurring subject of development updates. In August 2025 FakeFish said it had spent a lot of time honing the feel of combat, adjusting animations, sounds and enemy mechanics, and added that the Revenants were really angry now. After the limited November 2025 playtest, the team listed enemy AI in the 3D environment as something that still needed work. The May 2026 update added new enemy variations.
Combat also happens around the train. The store page describes crafting weapon stations for The Train and reinforcing its walls, and the May 2026 update integrated train defense encounters directly into the obstacle-clearing gameplay.
Players can face the Revenants alone or band together, in the words of the store page, to survive relentless combat. Co-op supports up to four players; see Multiplayer and Co-op. The store lists PvE among its tags. As of October 2026, no player-versus-player mode has been announced.
A player who dies leaves their inventory on their body and can return to recover it, according to the official demo FAQ. Items dropped or left behind may be permanently lost. More detail is on Saving and Progression.
As of October 2026, FakeFish has not published weapon names, damage values, ammunition types, a list of enemy types beyond the Revenants, boss encounters, or whether difficulty settings will exist.
