Added Settlement Traits, which sit alongside the per-settlement reputations a hero accumulates
11No Good/evil Slider2233Earlier Fable games had a morality slider. Do good things and your character grows a halo. Do bad things and you sprout devil horns. That system is gone.4455Ralph Fulton was direct about this: "Our version of morality isn't a sliding scale." The new system is local and subjective. Different towns see you differently based on what happened there.6677How it Works88991010Your reputation is built from your actions, but only the ones that were witnessed by at least one other person. If nobody sees you do something, it does not affect your reputation. Steal from a shop in Bowerstone while nobody is looking and the people of Bowerstone are none the wiser.11111212Every NPC has their own worldview. They judge your actions through their own lens. What one NPC considers noble, another might see differently. Fulton described this as "entirely subjective" and "probably representative of how morality exists in the world that we live in today." Even kicking chickens is not objectively good or evil, he said, in a way everybody will agree on.13131414Reputation Tags151516161717Your actions generate reputation tags that form a "word cloud" in each settlement. These labels follow you around:18181919Kick chickens in front of people and you become "Chicken Chaser" in that settlementBuy up property and you get tagged as "rich" or "tycoon"Perform heroic deeds and people call you a hero20202121These tags are local. Your reputation in Bowerstone can be completely different from your reputation in Bloodstone. The more people who witness a behavior, and the more often you do it, the more prominent that tag becomes.22222323There is a ceiling on how many of these labels can stick at once. A settlement can hold up to six active reputations for you at any one time, so the picture a town has of you is a handful of your most prominent behaviors there rather than an ever-growing list. Push a new reputation hard enough and it can crowd out one you have stopped reinforcing.24242525Playground Games has shown a handful of these labels in its own posts. An August 2026 example described a hero's standing after a few hours of play as "Killer, Shrewd, Rich", which gives a sense of the register: short, blunt, and mixing what you did with what you own. The full set of labels has not been published, and there is no confirmed list of how many exist.262627+Settlements carry their own traits alongside the reputations they hold for the hero. Examples the studio has given include "An underpopulated farming town" and "Famous for its giant corpse", the second being what a settlement is left with after the player kills Dave. The Living Population page covers how those traits are produced.28+2729You can read exactly where you stand through each person. Talking to an NPC opens a social panel that names them, gives their role, lists their Trait, and explains why they feel the way they do about you, so the otherwise invisible reputation math becomes something you can inspect one resident at a time.28302931Effects303231333234Reputation has real gameplay consequences:33353436NPC dialogue changes based on what they think of youShop pricing can be affected by your standing in a settlementSome quests are only available depending on your reputationRomance and marriage eligibility can be affected35373638The Town Crier37393840You can bribe the town crier to modify your reputation. This gives you a way to shape public opinion beyond just doing good or bad deeds. The specifics of how bribery works (cost, limits, what can be changed) have not been detailed.39414042No Character Morphing41434244The old games changed your character's appearance based on morality. Evil characters grew horns and went bald. Good characters got a halo. This feature has been removed.43454446The decision has split fans. Playground Games made the call because they do not believe in objective moral judgment and did not want the game telling players they are objectively good or evil.45474648World Consequences47494850Choices have permanent effects on the world. The most cited example: killing Dave the giant leaves his corpse in the landscape. House prices in that area permanently drop. NPCs reference it. See Property and Economy for how the economic system ties in.49515052Whose opinion matters to you is part of the roleplaying. You decide which towns you care about and which ones you are willing to burn your reputation in.
