Release window
Fable launches in Autumn 2026. It was originally targeting 2025, but Craig Duncan, Head of Xbox Game Studios, announced a delay on February 25, 2025. His words on the Official Xbox Podcast: "We are actually going to give Fable more time. It's going to ship in 2026 now." No specific month or date has been announced beyond "Autumn." See the development history for the full timeline leading up to this.
Simultaneous launch
All platforms receive the game at the same time. There is no timed exclusivity window for any version. Xbox, PS5, and PC players all get access on the same day.
Confirmed platforms
Fable will be available on:
Xbox Series X|S
PlayStation 5
PC (Steam and Microsoft Store)
Xbox Cloud Gaming
PlayStation 5: a first for the franchise
This is the first Fable game ever released on a PlayStation console. The original Fable trilogy was exclusive to Xbox and PC. Fable was one of Microsoft's biggest Xbox exclusives for over a decade.
The PS5 version was confirmed at the Xbox Developer Direct on January 22, 2026, alongside the PlayStation Blog announcement. This follows Microsoft's broader shift toward releasing Xbox-published games on competing platforms. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle followed a similar path.
For PlayStation players who have never experienced Fable, this entry is a full reboot. No knowledge of the previous games is needed.
PC details
On PC, Fable will be available through both Steam (app ID 2769570) and the Microsoft Store. PC minimum and recommended system requirements have not been officially announced. The game runs on the ForzaTech engine, which has been optimized for PC through the Forza Horizon series, so it has a track record on the platform.
Game Pass
Fable will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. This means Game Pass subscribers can play the game at launch without an additional purchase. Whether it will also be on the PC-only tier of Game Pass or just the Ultimate tier that includes console, PC, and cloud has not been specified.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere is confirmed. If you buy the game digitally on Xbox, you also get the PC version. Your save data carries between the two platforms. Buy once, play on both, keep your progress.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Fable will be playable through Xbox Cloud Gaming, which streams games to phones, tablets, browsers, and lower-end PCs. This is included with Game Pass Ultimate. It means you do not need an Xbox or a gaming PC to play, just a stable internet connection and a controller.
Cross-play and cross-save
Fable is a single-player game with no multiplayer component, so cross-play (playing with people on other platforms) does not apply. Cross-save between Xbox and PC is handled by Xbox Play Anywhere. Whether PS5 saves can transfer to or from Xbox/PC has not been addressed.
Engine
The game runs on ForzaTech, Turn 10 Studios' proprietary engine. It was built for racing games and adapted by Playground Games for open-world RPG use. ForzaTech supports raytracing, dynamic weather, and large seamless environments. Rumors in early 2023 that the project had switched to Unreal Engine 5 were debunked by journalists at Windows Central and GamesIndustry.biz.
