11What Hollow Folk Are2233Hollow Folk are Fable's undead. They go by two names in the franchise: Hollow Folk and Hollow Men. They are ancient corpses animated by restless souls of the dead, specifically by spirits called Wisps. Think of them as Albion's version of zombies, though they lean more skeletal than rotting.4455They are confirmed to return in the reboot with a visual redesign. The core concept remains the same: dead people who will not stay dead, shuffling and swarming in the darker corners of the world.6677The Name8899The name "Hollow Men" may reference T.S. Eliot's 1925 poem "The Hollow Men," which deals with themes of emptiness, paralysis, and spiritual death. The connection has never been officially confirmed by any Fable developer, but the thematic overlap is hard to ignore. These are literally hollow: empty shells animated by something outside themselves.10101111How They Work12121313Playground Games describes Hollow Folk as the collective name for the game's skeleton enemies. They appear in three forms that behave differently in a fight: melee-focused, ranged-focused, and armored. The armored variant is immune to ranged attacks, which forces a change of approach whenever a group mixes types.14141515Every Hollow Folk can be dismembered, provided the body part struck is not armored. Losing a limb does not stop them. They keep advancing despite the impairment, so taking one off buys position and accuracy rather than ending the fight.16161717Wraiths are the animating threat around them. These fast, flying ghosts spawn and inhabit further Hollow Folk during a fight, and defeating a Hollow that a Wraith raised does not settle the matter: the Wraith emerges again for a second stage of the encounter. Clearing them early is what keeps a fight from growing.18181919Earlier Fable material explained the Hollow Men as corpses reanimated by Wisps, restless souls drifting through the world. Playground Games has not repeated that explanation for this game, and the possession behaviour it has demonstrated is attributed to Wraiths instead.20202121Combat Behavior22222323Hollow Folk are a numbers enemy. A single one is not especially threatening; a dozen closing from several directions is a different problem, and the mix of melee, ranged and armored variants means a group cannot be answered with one tactic.24242525Their swarming role is close to that of Hobbes, but the feel is different. Hobbes are chaotic and bumbling, while Hollow Folk are relentless and eerie. Because Wraiths keep raising more of them, a group left alone grows rather than thins, and Combat in the first hands-on demo regularly involved large numbers, including during a mini-boss fight.26262727Weak Points28282929The confirmed weakness structure is positional rather than elemental. Armor determines what works: an armored Hollow Folk cannot be hurt by ranged attacks at all, and a limb can only be removed if that limb is unarmored. An unarmored enemy shot in the leg stumbles.30303131Prior Fable games gave Hollow Men a specific vulnerability to fire-based Will spells. Playground Games has not stated whether that carries into this game, and the demo material published so far does not mention it.32323333Visual Redesign343435-Playground Games has redesigned all returning creatures for the reboot. Concept art descriptions indicate the Hollow Folk redesign is "faithful to that messed-up fairytale vibe" that defines the new game's aesthetic. Fan reception to the redesigned Hollow Folk has been positive based on what has been shown.35+Playground Games has redesigned all returning creatures for the reboot. The Hollow Folk redesign follows the same brief as the rest: recognisable to anyone who knows the series, but rebuilt to sit inside the darker storybook look the studio has set out for this game.363637-The "messed-up fairytale" description captures what Playground Games is going for. Hollow Folk are not meant to look like generic fantasy skeletons. They are meant to look like something from a dark children's story, unsettling in a way that is specific to Fable's tone. They should feel like they belong in the same world as chicken-kicking and mockumentary interviews, which is a narrow aesthetic target.37+The guiding principle the studio has named is fairytale rather than fantasy, and the Hollow Folk are a clear test of it. They are not meant to read as generic fantasy skeletons. They are meant to look like something out of a dark children's story, unsettling in a way that belongs in the same world as chicken-kicking and mockumentary interviews. That is a narrow aesthetic target, and it is the same tone the rest of the game is built around.38383939Where They Appear40404141Expect Hollow Folk in the darker, more desolate parts of Albion. Marshlands, graveyards, ruins, and underground areas. In previous games they were most common at night and in gloomy locations. Bloodstone, with its dungeons and seedy atmosphere, is a likely location. The sewer system beneath the town is another candidate.42424343Fighting Hollow Folk44444545Hollow Folk were the main opposition in the first playable demo Playground Games gave to press and creators, a quest called Mud and Death set in a once-flooded, now-haunted mine. That demo is the source for most of what is known about how they fight.46464747The armored variant is the reason to carry more than one answer. Ranged attacks do nothing to it, so a crossbow used to clear Wraiths quickly has to give way to melee attacks or magic once armor appears. Style weaving is the system that makes switching between them practical mid-fight, and the demo showed combat built around exactly that kind of substitution.
