Emberville opens with the player character waking with clouded memories inside the Vitromotus, the underground prison, with no idea how they got there. The story runs along two tracks from that point: escaping toward the surface, and piecing together who the player was before the prison. Both are told mostly through in world documents, overheard scenes and the people the player rescues.
The Opening
Tired and confused, the player awakens engulfed in darkness in a prison that appears to have no end. Memories are clouded, but the desire for freedom is enough to endure, and the player carves a way out with nothing but wits and might. As despair sets in, a ray of hope arrives in the form of other prisoners: the denizens of a once thriving town, ravaged by vicious forces and imprisoned like everyone else, waiting for aid.
The studio's own website adds a companion that the current store description does not mention: a strange, luminous entity that calls itself the player's Memento, accompanying the escape through might and magic. Because that line appears only on the site and not in the current store copy, it is recorded here as stated rather than as confirmed shipping content.
The Town Above
Emberville itself was wrecked, in the words of a 2025 devlog, by a ritual that shattered both the world and the people in it. Its people were scattered, many of them into the prison. Rescuing them and bringing them home is the second half of the loop, and the town they rebuild becomes a living hub shaped by the player's deeds. That side of the game is covered on Rebuilding Emberville.
The town also has a founding story of its own. A diviner named Orallis found the fire ruined bones of a once great Duthatch city, settled near the forest, learned its history and laid its lingering souls to rest, and from those ashes the rebuilt settlement became Emberville. Her account, and the other townsfolk, are on Non-Player Characters.
The Written Record
The studio has published four authored in world texts, framed as documents collected inside the prison. They are the deepest lore surface the game has so far.
Text | What it covers |
|---|---|
The Archives | A welcome addressed to the reader by Adeos, the scribe of the acolytes, whose duty is to catalog the knowledge gathered over generations inside the walls. It explains that the denizens write things down because kymia compels them to cheat death but cannot prevent the decay of the mind. |
The Master's Journal I | The record of the figure who worked out what kymia is, beginning as a memory aid and ending with his discovery that emotion produces the energy keeping everyone alive. |
Kaldhor's Memories | Recollections written over many years by an inmate condemned for stealing food during a famine, covering his sentencing, the loss of his family to time, and the accident that left his body broken beyond repair. |
Gathering at the Library | A scene rather than a document: acolytes drinking together and trading news about Mordaxius, what he did to Kaldhor, the notes he left in his laboratory, and the thing now guarding them. |
Figures in the Record
Figure | What is known |
|---|---|
The Master | The leader figure who discovered kymia and, by his own account, saw in it the key to regaining freedom. Later in world material presents him as teaching what he learned to pupils. |
Adeos | The scribe of the acolytes and the archive keeper who narrates The Archives. Also covered on Non-Player Characters. |
Mordaxius | The wizard who infused Kaldhor's soul into a piece of armor when kymia could not heal him, took extensive notes, left them in his laboratory and travelled deeper into the Vitromotus toward The Rift. Preview coverage of a pre release build renders the name as Mordaxias; the written lore page spells it Mordaxius, and both refer to one character. |
Kaldhor | The inmate whose memories are one of the four texts and whose ruined body became the Heartwood Abomination. See Bosses and Enemies. |
Orallis | The diviner whose journey ends with the founding of Emberville. |
In World Dating
The only dates the fiction gives are internal. The Master's journal notes that, according to their logs, the year is 68, day unknown, and a later entry in the same text records the year as 72. Nothing anchors those years to an outside calendar, and no source states how long the prison has existed.
The Acolytes
The word acolyte carries weight in this setting and is not yet pinned down. The in world texts use it as a general term for the people held in the Vitromotus, with Adeos titled the scribe of the acolytes. The studio has separately marketed a named group under the same word without publishing any explanation of it. The open question, and everything actually stated about it, is on The Acolytes.
What the Prologue Shows
Five outlets played the same pre release prologue build in September 2026. It is the only play verified account of the story that exists, it covers only the opening, and none of it is confirmed for the shipping Early Access build.
The prologue runs from character creation through waking in the prison and escaping toward the surface. Town rebuilding and farming were not part of it.
An item that retains memories across deaths was reported, on the reasoning that an acolyte's memory erodes from dying repeatedly. Accounts differ on its exact name, and only one names a previous owner.
Reported length varies enough between accounts that no figure is given here.
In world dialogue in that build presents the player character as an acolyte, and a hostile wizard names a leader of them. Both details come from one account each.
Open Questions
As of 11 September 2026 the studio has not published who the player character was before the prison, what the ritual that wrecked the town was or who performed it, what the Memento is, or how the escape resolves. None of that has been stated, and nothing here should be read as implying an answer.
