Emberville is a 2D pixel art action role playing game and dungeon crawler developed and self published by Cygnus Cross. The player wakes with no memories inside the Vitromotus, a vast underground world created as a magical dungeon where death no longer lasts, and carves a way toward the surface. Imprisoned alongside the player are the denizens of a once thriving town, and rescuing them turns the other half of the game into rebuilding Emberville itself.
The studio's own summary calls it an action adventure dungeon crawler wrapped around a town rebuilding mechanic, layered with deep progression systems and a life skills system. That description maps onto how the game actually divides: a dungeon to descend into, a town that grows as survivors come home, and a personal Estate where crafting, farming and decorating happen. Emberville enters Steam Early Access on 27 October 2026 for Windows and Linux.

Premise
Tired and confused, the player character wakes engulfed in darkness inside a prison that appears to have no end. Memories are clouded, but the desire for freedom is enough to endure. With nothing but wits and might, the player carves a way out, eager to embrace the light of the sun, and finds that the prison holds more than monsters: the townsfolk of a ruined settlement, now ravaged by vicious forces, are trapped there and waiting for aid.
As the player rescues them from various terrible fates, they lend their skills, teach their trades, share their secrets and hand out quests. Running underneath all of it is kymia, described in store copy as a mysterious power born from emotions that brings those trapped within the Vitromotus back to life. The longer version of the plot, the in world texts and the named figures behind them sit on Story and Setting.
The Three Spaces
A June 2025 devlog set out the world as three connected spaces, and the current store copy still describes the same split.
Space | What it is |
|---|---|
The dungeon. An endless underground prison world built as magical confinement, reshaped over the years by kymia into strange biomes and bizarre monsters. | |
The town and main player hub. The more of it the player rebuilds, the more systems, mechanics and rewards unlock, and the more the town tells its own story. | |
A personal, customizable space where the player crafts, builds, grows crops and decorates. All of the life skill tools live there. |
Combat and Character Building
Combat is action focused and rewards positioning, timing and knowledge. On top of what the studio calls a traditional two button system sit weapon bound combos that chain different types of attacks, plus combat skills tied to the active class. Four styles have been shown publicly: swordplay, fists, arrows and magic.

Progression is unusual in that the class layer is driven by equipment. Levelling up weapon and armor categories is what unlocks new classes, classes can be changed at any time, and a class can inherit passive and active skills from other classes the player has already learned. Weapons level independently of the character, so using a weapon type long enough unlocks skills and bonuses specific to it.
Life Skills, Crafting and the Town
Away from combat, Emberville runs a set of life skills split between gathering and crafting: mining, woodcutting, herborism and fishing on one side, weaponsmithing, armorsmithing, alchemy, cooking, carpentry, jewelcrafting and tailoring on the other. These gate the rare materials and high end recipes behind the best gear. Farming sits alongside them, with planting, watering and harvesting all implemented.

Rescued villagers are the connective tissue. Each one restored to the town lends a trade, unlocks mechanics and opens quests, and carpentry supplies the advanced materials the rebuild consumes. The studio is explicit that the game progresses through exploration, rebuilding and the player's choices, not only through combat.
Character Creation
Characters are built before the descent, with dozens of options for hair styles, beards, facial features and colours. The studio has been open about what that costs in a pixel art game: because every character is unique, every combination needs hand drawn pixel animations rather than a rig swap, and a September 2025 devlog put that animation pass at roughly 60 percent complete at the time of writing.

Early Access
The Early Access build is planned to cover gameplay from the start through the early and middle game, with single player support, base building, gathering, crafting, farming and cooking, equipment and skills systems, melee, magic and ranged combat, the combat class system, and both keyboard and mouse and controller support. The studio estimates roughly 18 months in Early Access as of October 2026, up from an earlier estimate of 12 months, and notes that community involvement may extend that. A free demo is scheduled for the October 2026 Steam Next Fest, which starts on 19 October. Full detail, including what is held back for version 1.0, is on Early Access.
Platforms, Languages and Store Features
Emberville is listed for Windows and Linux on Steam, and a GOG store page also lists it for Windows with the same 27 October 2026 date. As of October 2026 the Steam listing names nine languages, and English is the only one with full audio. Store features include single player, full controller support with DualShock and DualSense handling, Steam Input, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, save anytime, adjustable text size, camera comfort options, custom volume controls and adjustable difficulty, with both stereo and surround sound. Content descriptors cover violence and general mature content. Hardware figures are on System Requirements.
Not Announced as of October 2026
Several things readers ask about have no published answer, and it is worth stating the absences plainly rather than guessing at them.
Question | Status |
|---|---|
Price | No price has been published. The studio has said the price will not change after Early Access, though a discount during Early Access is possible. |
How many classes and weapon categories ship | A 2025 devlog named targets of 13 classes and 16 weapon categories and hedged them in the same breath. No shipped counts have been confirmed. |
Biome names | No biome has ever been named publicly. Devlogs refer to them only by number. |
Which performer voices which character | No role mappings have been published for any of the 22 named performers. See Voice Cast. |
Multiplayer or co-op | Single player is the only player mode listed, and the Early Access plan says single player support. The community team has said co-op is being explored for 1.0, with no commitment. |
macOS or console versions | macOS is listed as unsupported and no console version has been announced. In September 2026 the community team said the game is sticking to PC for Early Access and looking at other platforms for 1.0, without naming any. |
Other storefronts | A GOG store page lists the game for Windows alongside the Steam listing, both dated 27 October 2026. |
