Combat in Emberville is action focused, played from an isometric view, and described by the studio as rewarding positioning, timing and knowledge rather than reflexes alone. The base is what a July 2026 press release calls a traditional two button combat system. On top of that sit weapon bound combos and combat skills tied to the class the player currently has active.
The Base Layer
A 2025 devlog set out the three ingredients the studio was building toward, and the marketing language since has stayed consistent with them.
Element | How it works |
|---|---|
Two primary attack buttons | The core inputs. The studio says button mashing will get a player through, while mastering timing and chains is the deeper option. |
Directional inputs and combo variations | Attacks vary by the direction the player is pushing, which is what turns a repeated input into a combo rather than a loop. |
Chainable skills | Skills can be linked together into longer sequences. Charge attacks and player against enemy collision were both working in engine by May 2025. |
Weapon bound combos | Unique combos are tied to a weapon rather than to the character, so changing weapon changes the chain. See Weapons and Equipment. |
Class skills | Combat skills come from the active class, and a class can inherit passive and active skills from other classes already learned. See Classes and Progression. |
Fighting Styles
The studio has publicly demonstrated four styles: swordplay, fists, arrows and magic. Individual weapons have been shown with distinct behaviour rather than as reskins.
Style | What has been shown |
|---|---|
Swordplay | Close quarters attacking. The one class the studio has named, the Knight, is built around a sword and shield and is described as preferring to get its hands dirty and its blades bloodied. |
Fists | Unarmed and knuckle based fighting, shown as one of the four styles in an August 2026 video. |
Arrows | Ranged attacking with a bow. Ranged combat is on the Early Access content list. |
Magic | The staff lets the player condense kymia into attacks that a 2025 devlog describes as ranging from a poke to a devastation. |
Axe | Shown in the same devlog as an area of effect weapon with huge arching slashes, suited to clearing groups. |
Enemy Behaviour
Aggro is handled by radius. A green radius around an enemy means it cannot see the player, and a red one means the player is in range. Groups behave as a unit: the whole group engages when at least one of its members has the player in range, and disengages when none of them do. Named bosses, enemy concepts and the creatures behind them are on Bosses and Enemies.
The Interface
The studio lists a dynamic user interface among the game's distinguishing features: a mechanic that changes the heads up display in accordance with the player's needs, with the stated aim of making it easier to deal with several systems at once without taking decisions away from the player or getting in the way of inventory management. How that behaves in practice has not been detailed.
At Early Access Launch
Melee, magic and ranged combat are all listed as present when Early Access opens on 27 October 2026, alongside the combat class system, equipment and skills systems, and support for both keyboard and mouse and controllers. Formidable bosses and a variety of monsters appear in the studio's list of goals for version 1.0 rather than in the Early Access list, so the enemy roster at launch is not the final one. See Early Access.
Hands On Notes
The following comes from coverage of a pre release prologue build in September 2026, not from the studio, and may not describe the shipping game. Details corroborated by more than one account are listed first.
Dodging works in any direction, and the player has separate primary and secondary attacks that swing toward the mouse pointer.
Every enemy telegraphs with a wind up animation, which is what makes the dodge readable rather than reactive.
The opening section was repeatedly described as demanding, with one writer dying six times in a single room of hooded figures and another finding group fights and boss fights stiff.
Enemy variety in that build included spider like creatures, hooded wizards, shield carrying warriors, ranged spellcasters and archers.
Levelling a bow far enough unlocked a charge shot, which fits the studio's description of weapon levels unlocking weapon specific skills.
